Poutine anyone?

Well over in the Q&A Forum there is a fun thread on hot dogs (the food).  Of course in the meanderings on food in N.America + Canada the topic of fries covered with gravy and cheese curds came up.

The comment of a poutine thread came up AND I thought it would be fun so here we are.

So some talking points for this thread...

1.  Poutine in HK and your point of reference to evaluate the quality of this poutine.
2.  Your recommend for the best pountine (I'd assume somewhere in the Belle Provence).

Cheers!

Pout-what-tine?

You're going to have to post a pic.  That sounds really gross.

I normally cut our Canadian neighbors a lot of slack, mostly because they're funny and send us Americans really good comedians,   However French Fries covered in gravy and . . . did you say cheese 'CURDS'?!   just sounds like an affront to the French (yeah, I know, what could possible affront the French? ) and the McDonalds corporation.

And now you say that they've imported this culinary atrocity to HK?!

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

LOL...

No pics but here is a link.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine

I figure it looks no better or worse than some Asian dishes when referenced from a Western POV.

It's a French Canadian dish so not sure about the affrontry level to the French (but they are two different Frenches so who knows).  It's actually pretty decent eats when done correctly.

You know I am from the north east(us), all my life at any  dinner you get fries with gravy and cheese.

All the sudden out of god knows where, this poutine comes out.

Now that I think about it, they do that sometimes, give the food a foreign name and pretend its new.
Like macaroni became pasta, and tender loin became fillet minion.

I wonder whats next?

I wouldn't say out of nowhere...it's apparently been eaten in Quebec since the 1950s.  It's been kicking around Ontario for at least 25 years that I can vouch for.

Culinarily it is specifically cheese curds and gravy on fries.  In high school I did the fries/cheese/gravy thing but poutine has a definite textural/mouthfeel difference.  The reminiscing is coming from hankering for foods that you can't have.

Macaroni is pasta though?

But I see where you are coming from...the one I get the biggest kick out of is Kiwi's (the fruit) and it's renaming.

Hi sunswept,

Yes, I believe there should be poutine at the New York Fries that opened.  I haven't been but word is that it is in Harbour City in TST.

Easy to make.  Fry up some medium cut fries, throw the cheese curds on and ladle on the gravy.

FUCK, I can't believe it took me so long to find this thread...sneaky bastards.

The poutine they make at NYF is not great. As any worthy poutine connoisseur should know (EDIT: and as you previously mentioned), the cheese used should ideally be cheddar curds and the amount they use should range from excessive to criminal. at NYF they're stingy with their mozza'; dont get me started on their gravy!!!

As for the pronunciation difference that Rapfan was talking about; in Montreal (or MON-RAY-AL) it's enunciated as 'Putt-in' whereas the rest of canada says 'Poo-TEEN.' Which, judging by the photo above, seems slightly more appropriate.

butler, my man, don't knock it until you've tried it.  it seems gross and is def an heart attack in the waiting, but it's so damn good.  i generally hit up the cul de sac in LKF for poutine.  it's by no means the best i've ever had, but certainly does the job.

Alright you talked me into it!   Poutrine here I come.

I used to think anal sex was pretty gross too until I tried it.    Come to think of it, a Poutrine French Fry kinda looks like my dick after anal sex,   so I guess it can't be all bad.

Since i live in La Belle Province of Quebec,
Poutine is very common here and everyone eats it..
if you didnt know, they even sell it in school cafeterias

As for the best poutines... it depends on the person
some people like the gravy thick like New York Fries or like their sauce light like McDonalds

As for me, the best poutines must be those from the restaurant called "La Belle Province"
it is a restaurant chain only in quebec that sells hot dogs, hamburgers and poutines..
