In World Cup football, anything can happen. I prefer this result however...

For me, if Aus makes it to the second round as second-place getters and england tops its group, I'm hoping for sth like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiO6cK4XUuI

For the first half of that match in 2003, England played its full strength team (Beckham, Owen, Lampard, etc).  Their pre-game plan was to play its second team for the second half, thinking they'd be up at half time.  Unfortunately for them, Aus went into the changing room in the lead and ended up winning 3:1.

I'm also hoping that England top their group and meet Australia as their next match, as I prefer that to having to play Germany, which is the other possible combo...

I'm assuming Germany would top it as they are a traditional powerhouse.  I was assuming we'd be fighting it out with Serbia.

You're probably right about Serbia - I was more meaning that I hope England top their group, because if they screw up and come in second, they'll meet Germany most likely... not liking that prospect!

even though it appears that Germany always makes it to the Final Four, this might be the WC that they have a down year.  Deaths to key members of any team always plays on the mind of the players psychologically, and with Robert Enke gone, I have a feeling that Germany may be lucky just to get to the final 8.

Yeah, it would be really bad if England as Group winners end up meeting Germany in stage 2

But since its likely Germany top their group, 2nd place is really up for grabs in their group...

Ghana - Strong in midfield
Serbia - Strong defence
Australia - Strong team ethic

England might actually have an easier time against Australia, whose players are more familiar. Serbia and Ghana could trouble with their strong physical style and ruffle the feathers of players like  Rooney perhaps

Thats the match where Rooney made his international debut as the youngest player to play for England. Now Theo Walcott is the youngest.

You can't take the match into consideration TD. It was just a friendly.

i just think its ironic how France shouldnt have even been there (via Henry's hand) and now they've
been given a group that is quite easy to get out of

I cannot, simply cannot bear to take another penalty shoot-out against Germany, the stress is too much! I end up jumping around the room/bar shouting and cursing at the screen/chewing my knuckles and entire fist hoping and praying... and I am not a religious man!

Come July 2010, all bros will be glued to the tv set. I am sure WGs will have a booming business when bros go SNs to watch World Cup.

I wonder what shock it will cause should it be a North Korea vs South Africa final.

Yeah....for penalty shoot-outs, the GK is the main man...but none of the guys in the current squadinspires confidence cos of their inexperience.

The best GK is David James, and he's injured this season and probably won't go to the World Cup.

yep, very true - we may have the best squad for a generation, yadda, yadda, yadda....

but truth is, we just historically - recent and longer - never have had the confidence/edge in penalty shootouts - its a psychologically barrier thats passed down from generations of Eng footballers and almost impossible to shake off

strangely enough, the US's strong point has always been their brillant goalkeepers - Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller, and now Tim Howard.  If it ever came down to shootouts for the US, I think we'd be in good shape.

Everytime a World Cup is on it is all over the English tabloids saying it is our year blah blah blah, again we qualified with all wins except 1 and the papers are raving about Capello and England's chance of winning it. I've been watching too many World Cups and Euros to not to expect too much from England.

We had an easy group in the qualifiers, and when we played against the likes of Spain and Brazil in friendlies we were toothless. i would say we will hit the quarter-finals then will go out probably on penalties, probably by the likes of Germans, Portuguese or the Argies.

I do hope on the other hand we get to at least the semis, we ain't had nothing to cheer about in years.

Will be flying my St George's flag, COME ON ENGLAND!!

I know friendlies mean jack, but it always feels nice bringing that one result up when talking to my pommie mates. If we played them again, I am all but positive we'd get beaten but it's always good taking on the old enemy.

Didn't know you were an Aussie. In the World Cup, its all about the strikers. Australia's strikers are little known. Its all about the midfielders and forwards for your team.

Just hoping that England don't disappoint. Again.

I'm surprised there's little talk of Spain. Their style of play is really great to fun. And they are finally a team fulfilling their potential.

Spain is still the favourite.

We prefer to talk about underdogs.

I hope one of the African team can reach the final, at  least.
If Ivory Coast can get thru the group of death, the rest should watch out. Rough and they can kick some ass.
Last world cup, they fail to qualify because most of their main players were yellow /red carded towards the 2nd round. This year, they have more experience and well balance players....

Australia / New Zealand...good luck, maybe next world cup when they start to brew the strikers. No offence to the supporters but that;s the fact.
