what grantorino2 said....though I'd expand it a bit, coming from the viewpoint of a Cantonese and English-speaking dude, cuisine, climate, living standard, high-tech, mongering, etc.  Plus I've spent significant time in all of these places, so if there are any great cites that I missed, it's because I've either never been there or didn't like the place.

1. HK
2. SF
3. SZ/DG/GZ
4. Singapore
5. Vancouver
6. Toronto
7. KL
8. LA and vicinity
9. NYC
10. Chicago
11. BKK
12. Shanghai
13. London
14. Penang - great beaches, lots of high-tech, good mongering, lots of history
15. Las Vegas - loses points for not-great-mongering and too damn hot in the summer
16. Seoul - loses points because of not-very-accessible-mongering and some language difficulties
17. Tokyo - see 16.
18. Cebu
19. Dallas
20. Atlanta

All good calls, although I'm going to take a pot shot at San Francisco for being decidedly INtolerant in a rather perverse way.

JeSun, LA in the top 10?  Do tell, is it the weather?  The girls?

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

LA - positive points for decent mongering, lots of things to do and places to see, large Asian population, good food, good high tech, outstanding weather.  Loses points for being very crime-ridden in many parts with a huge low-income population, unbearable traffic in many parts, and too much urban sprawl.

1. San Francisco
2. New York City
3. Bangkok
4. Macau
5. London

I have been to lots of places but coming from the Bay Area and working in SF for 10 years, I give it the #1 spot.  the place has more packed into such a small area.  Yes, Macau is smaller, but it only wins in the mongering section and falls short of SF everywhere else.  New York city is better than SF but I've only spent a few days there in the past 20 years.  It looses to SF in the weather department and the size department.  Bangkok is absolutely wonderful but looses out in weather and pollution.  It beats Macao in food, and maybe has a heads up in the price of mongering.  London is just wonderful, but dang, is it expensive.

You people obviously don't get around much. The ONLY good thing about HK is the punting and the food! Everything else about HK sucks! The air is shit, you spend all your time either in an office or apartment or shopping mall. There is no city in the world where one has so little contact with the natural environment. And wherever you go, you're surrounded by thousands of people. HK is one of the most claustrophobic places I've ever been.

Give me a European city with expansive parks, outdoor cafes, and decent weather. Zurich, Lucerne, Berlin, Paris (you can keep the Parisians), Rome.

I agree the air is not great in HK.  But I have always felt very connected to the environment while in HK.  The mountaiins and water are all around you, I've visited some of the parks on the HK and Kowloon side and I think they are small, but world-class.  Plus each area has their own recreation area which I love.  If you like to run, you can visit a different track everyday for a month and get to know the different areas of HK.  I would disagree with you on this one point.

I think I need to visit Switzerland this year....

Yes - and please note that approx. 80% of Hong Kong is still GREEN?

Legacy of the days when we had to catch rain water requiring "Water Catchment Areas."

I literaly walk out my front gate and within a minute I am in the middle of wilderness - and for those who wants a bit of civilization - there are actually PAVED trails right thru some of these wilderness (although of course there are people who hates this/reasons why this may not be ideal).

And as for being claustrophobic - all one needs to do is either go max. and hour by train to China, Ferry to Macau or fly to Manila, Taipei, Thailand etc easily and quite cheaply on these budget airlines.

People living in other MAJOR cities i.e. Taipei, Taokyo NY, SFO, London etc - you're all also stuck "in town" for most of your lives. Yes you can go and drive out of town - but the fact remains that we in Hong Kong can escape very easily/conveniently too.

World-class parks in HK? You mean like Hyde Park, Central Park, Golden Gate Park, Bois de Boulogne, the Tiergarten in Berlin? Where are these places, I'd like to check them out my next trip.

Hey SEAJ, I was defending HK and then you dissed San Francisco.

Please don't lump SF in with those other cities.  San Francisco itself is a VERY small city, surrounded by water/beaches on three sides, connected to Marin County and the Marin headlands by the Golden Gate Bridge.  We have, arguably the most beautiful and one of the largest city parks in the world (Golden Gate Park) the Presidio.  Weather 90% of the time the temperature is between 50 and 75 degrees, year round, 24 hours per day, with low humidity.  This is about as close to the Garden of Eden as you can get.  People spend most of their time outdoors enjoying themselves.  And there are world-class views from everywhere in the city (much like HK). Also, it's front page news if a quart of oil spills into the San Francisco Bay.  People will not tolerate ANY envirnomental degradation to their city.

Respectfully,
GT2

Parks like what you think of like Central Park (NY) Stanley Park (Vancouver)Golden gate (SFO) Hyde park etc in Hong Kong are..... disappointing!!  Don't even bother with Victoria Park or Kowloon park etc unless you want to pick up Filipina/Indonesian Domestic helpers.  Mostly concrete and a few sprigs only there!

It's the COUNTRY parks all over the place in Hong Kong that you gotta check out - and these are usually the old water catchment areas.

And they're NOT small as Grantorino2 says - they are HUGE. TaiLamchung, TaiMoShan, Ma On shan, Sai kung country parks etc - heck even the Taitam/Pokfulam/Aberdeen country interconnected parks on Hong Kong island bascially covers most of the mountainous "backbone" of the island.
