Global Warming or Global Freezinig?

Weather seems to be getting cooler, colder and to freezing, more pronounced than it has ever been, right here in HK. Or am I getting older?
I finally got myself a made in china's heater a week ago.

Read some articles and watched the news and here are som of  the current events:

1) China - Beijing received its heaviest snowfall in almost six decades last week, with low temperatures hitting -15 Celcius. while temperatures were forecast to reach -30 Celcius in the northernmost parts of the country. Lowest in 30 years.

2) Korea- Seoul, a blizzard dumped more than 25 cm, the heaviest snowfall in Korea to date.

3) In the U.S., it's the coldest start to winter since 2000. Record-breaking lows were forecast for 2/3 of the country, for most areas east of the Rockies.  More than 400 flights at Chicago area airports were canceled earlier in January.

4) India, freezing condition in northern part of country. Unprepared and  death toll is now at appx. 60 and number is increasing..
5) Central Europe.
- Italy, residents struggled with rare cold and ice.
- Germany, north was worst hit last Sunday with roads and railways made unpassable by blizzards. Authorities advised people to stockpile at least four days worth of food and essentials and avoid travel.
- France, freezing conditions have strained the electricity system, which heats most homes raising the risk of widespread power cuts.

6) Poland, more than 120 people have frozen to deathwith teperature hitting -25°Celcius.

7) Finally Gret Britain, snow and freezing weather in northern England and Scotland with temperatures dropping to as low as -10 Celcius.
To those Premier League fans, did you notice last week fixtures? 8 matches were cancelled. fucking A....

So are we on the verge of getting our Ballsacks Freeze??

actually ppl saying the effects of global warming are colder winters
somthing due to the salinity of the artic or sumthing like tat, saw it on discovery channel

since its mostly talking about the artic, these colder winters are usually found in the northern hemisphere which you be similar to the examples you listed

global warming is about the average temperature going up and the climate changing (warming and more extreme in both ends)
these cases u mentioned are abnormal weather patterns than climate tgetting colder

Given there are about one billion people in India.  The relatively low death count is unusual.  It's even more unusual to hear that poland of all places had an even higher death toll from this weather.
I guess it was just colder in Poland than it was in India due to it's location more north.  Still it's just another fluke weather according to the scientists, global warming should continue after this.

Not a fluke at all.  While the globe is getting warmer we'll experience it on the human level not as warmer weather but as more extreme weather.

So, the globe on average will be warmer by a little bit.  In your neighborhood what you'll get is MORE of something, could be heat, could be cold, could be hurricanes and tornadoes, you get the idea.  A generally rough time all around, but at least the Arctic will be free of ice year round!

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

Quit complaining...

You don't live in the North East US.  The other day the wind chill was close to 0, we are talking about Fahrenheit boys which is about -18 C.  You guys don't even know what wind chill factor is and you don't want to find out.  When I am in HK, it's like 70 F out, I am in shorts and a tshirt, sweating because I am staring at people with thick jackets on.  I dream of HK weather, well except for the summers, u guys can keep those! LOL...

A recent article in the Comment Is Free (CIF) section of The Guardian:

Britain's cold snap does not prove climate science wrong

Climate skeptics are failing to understand the most basic meteorology - that weather is not the same as climate, and single events are not the same as trends.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/enviro ... ap-climate-sceptics

The Guardian has a very active comment section on various issues, and the topic of Global Warming is always fiercely debated. If anyone is interested to hear strong opinions on both sides of the debate, check it out. Some of the comments are quite good.

A very good recent article in the New York Times attributes these periodic cold snaps to something called the 'Arctic Oscillation' that is a periodically occurring transient weather event having nothing to do with climate:

Cold Patches in a Warm World

MMGW in the UK has been exposed as a fraud, the UEA research institute has been found to be tampering with the data adjusting it upwards regularly.

the Met office has also been found tampering with its data, a spokesman recently said that the UK temp stats have ALREADY been taken. In that rather than a daily count for the temps and an average, they take the hottest temps and use this for an average. The temps for Winter 2009/2010 were taken in November.

All of these bodies refuse to release their methodoly and methods as well as data, hence its not science, cold fusion is disproven quickly as methiods data and stats are released, if nobody else can replicate your results it ain't science.

Doesn't really matter much to HK and China though, as the environmental lobby isn't powerful here, companies like the MTR do environmental things not to save the environment but to save money, say the platform barriers that save 60% airconditioning costs.

Also Dava Bay has had its reactors upgraded recently so HK is powered by lots of nuclear power! , so don't feel bad about using energy in HK

My trip in December was in Taiwan, it was nice and warm. Philippines it was hot.  When I get to Hong Kong it's effing COLD and rainy every day.
Luckily I flew from SFO so I had a light jacket at least to wear but it really wasn't enough.
Can someone explain the weather pattern in this area?  It reallly caught me offgaurd, as I packed mostly jeans and summer weight shirts.

That's old news and was blown way out of proportion. George Monbiot has written some pretty convincing articles in The Guardian putting it all into perspective.

Meh.... Global Warming itself is blown way out of proportion.... at least in terms of what we humans are doing to the environment, and how much money we're supposed to dump into green projects.....

The world climate has been cycling through warm and cold stages for eons....
Greenhouse gasses, CO2 emissions, etc. barely affect the natural order of things.... not compared to say, volcanic eruptions....

All this Global Warming crap is just the current hype.  The world is supposed to spend Trillions of dollars on green projects, and the outcome will barely affect "climate change", if at all?
How about we spend those trillions more useful things.... like feeding the poor, rebuilding Haiti, infrastructure in developing nations, cure cancer, import more WG's, etc.....

I'm not saying that we should pollute the world until it's uninhabitable....
Just that all this is over-hyped....

I really don't know whether the theory of global warming is correct or not - I am, after all, no more a scientist than the nay sayers - but what strikes me about all these comments from the deniers is how absolutely certain they claim to be that global warming is a hoax. That it is the majority opinion of the scientific community is surely confirmation that there exists, at least, some credible basis for the theory. Yet the denier negates it all in the same sweeping way that creationists dismiss evolution. You even have deniers talking about a global conspiracy of deception - which to me sounds no different than what other conspiracy nutters are forever going on about - while ignoring all the vested interests financing the opposition in the global warming debate.

The earth is a closed system. If we do nothing, and the global warming dislocation does occur, people will starve, coastlines will be flooded, the world's population will take a hit, and we will all have to adapt to the new climate's dictates. And through it all, the climate deniers will claim that the droughts and floods are the inevitable result of natural climate cycles, for the deniers have constructed an argument in which, regardless of the outcome, they can never be wrong: if global temps don't rise, the global warming hypothesis is mistaken; if temps do rise, it's because of natural climate cycles, and the theory is still wrong. For the denier, it would seem that human activity can have no influence whatsoever on global temperatures.

If, on the other hand, the theory is mistaken - if, contrary to what the physicists tell us, atmospheric concentrations of CO2 have no effect on global temp - and we still make an effort to reduce carbon emissions and shift the world economy towards reliance on renewable, non-polluting energy sources, then the world will be a cleaner, healthier place in which to live. Isn't everyone agreed that we should be heading in that direction anyway? Ditto for deforestation. Therefore, even tho the theory hasn't been proven to everyone's satisfaction, considering what's at stake, wouldn't it be wiser to err on the side of caution?

In any case, the deniers really don't need to worry; there isn't a chance in hell that governments anywhere are going to be capable of mandating the tough decisions necessary to tackle global warming, real or not. The idea that rich countries will fork over $200 billion annually to the developing world is absurd; look at how difficult it has been for the governments of rich countries to reign in agricultural subsidies that are even now devastating 3rd-world farmers. The US Congress is about to initiate a carbon trading scheme that, as the proposed legislation presently stands, would grant a 10 year exemption to the energy industry's worst offenders. Then there are all those billions of Indians and Chinese want nothing less than to live like rich Westerners. Come 2050, we'll be talking about trying to reduce carbon emissions to 2010 levels.

Hunter...

As I told you...I'm actually doing a Geography Degree ...LOL i know..

But the world is actually getting cooler...here on the surface of the earth in the troposphere temperatures are gradually rising because of yes...u all know this ... global warming....However in beyond the trophosphere where heat energy is not trapped temperature is decreasing...we are actually in a point where climate is going to get cooler..but global warming has kinda reversed the affects....

also..'global warming' is the increasing temperature of the earth..but...also more unpredictable weather patterns, and unforeseeable weather disasters....mainly caused by the affects of global warming on the thermalhaline circulation patters in the ocean...and the water cycle....
