Froddo, your naivety is so huge it's almost cute!!  I hope for your own sake you remember your opinion is just your opinion and no more.  Reality is something else.

That was the whole point of the story, even the loan-shark was surprised how little money it took, and how the guy would prefer to act on a constant stream of favours rather than buy his freedom and integrity back.

well china is kinda scared it will set a precedent.  A handful of companies are pissed off at the govt (like any country) but if google is the pioneer in leaving, others may follow is the real fear. then things spiral out of control

No, recent article just came out that google is having talks with China again to try to work out a better way of them staying in China. Like I said, China wont back down to googles demands and google is smart enough not to want to leave China so they'll have to acqueise to China's demands if they want to stay in the country. It's on Yahoo! do a search.  just 2 days ago. Google is China's bitch

and no other companies are leaving China even if google does adn sets a precendent. Googles company motto is different from other companies. The way they make money is different than any company's so even if China loses googles innovatinos and technological prowess, it's only gonna be one company. Other companies know that China is where the future is at so they're be stupid to pull out just to spite China or show support for Google. Fuck google and their high and mighty attitude. If you're gonna work in someone else's backyard follow their rules or get the fuck out. Dont demand from them what you wouldnt want them demanding from you coming into your backyard.

D'Art, I don't know what to make of your isolated Froddo quote ... I was being ironic re politicians being "ethical", that should have been obvious, and it's also why I put ethics in quotes.

I appreciate being thought of as "cute", but to quote you back ...

When interviewed and asked why he didn't enforce the loan, he said "for $15k I can own a US senator, why would I want to collect?" ... clearly power matters more than money, even in the 'land of the free' .....

Do you really believe any punk loan shark could "own" a US Senator for only US$15k?  You did say "own", and all that implies. If I "owned" a senator I would expect to make a huge amount of money from the relationship ..... how the hell could I do that for $15k unless it was like my example of setting him up with a whore and then blackmailing him.

$15k is such a pittance!  US Senators pull salaries of circa US$175k pa, but the prestige, perks, benefits, (and retirement benefits) of staying in office for extended periods are high. It can be a springboard to higher careers. Only a handful would have realistic chances of shooting for the Presidency, but 7 figure jobs in the corporate world are not out of reach.

Am I really naive to doubt a Senator would risk their reputation, their job, their future, for a measly $15k? You should also know there are 100 US senators (2 for each State) and almost half of these are millionaires in their own right.

50 years? I thought it was longer. If that's the timeframe then HK's got 37 years left of its own democracy. 37 years will come faster than you think
