does anyone know if as a Canadian, I can get a HK bank account that can hold RMB??
I know RMB is regulated by china somehow but not clear on the details.

I helped a Singapore Guy, when he was in Hong Kong last November, he opened a HSBC Power Vantage Account. He would TT the cash in Singapore into his Power Vantage Account in Hong Kong. The money/cash remains in Singapore Dollars. So, I assume, if you TT in whatever currency, it will remain as such. When you need to withdraw cash through the common HSBC ATM in Hong Kong, the prevailing exchange rates applies.

Today's Rates

I just exchanged some cash 30 minutes ago from my regular Money Changer in Hung Hom Estate.

RMB10,000.00 = HKD11,351.00 (Yet Again) Good rates I supposed!

Usually you can get a high rate at SZ small shop, but they may give you the fake money.
So if the amount you want to exchange is not large, it is better to exchange it at local bank.
I found that local bank offer more or less the same at the exchange store in the street.

Recommended practice is open an RMB account at a bank and change using
TT rate rather than Notes rates.  Best rates are actually the Chinese banks (not BoC)
Fubon and Public also fairly good.  Hang Seng okay if you are a Prestige Customer.

If you are not a resident then opening an account is a hassle (you need address proof); in that case there are many money changers in Central/Sheung Wan area.

Don't use money changers at the airport or train stations esp  Lo Wu.

Priority 1  Watch out for FAKE notes.
A good rate with one fake RMB100 note will screwed you up!

Here is your ref rate (As at 21-01-2010 20:10)
CNY/HKD        sell 1.1383         buyl 1.1433  i.e.  RMB10,000 will cost you HK$11433

Try going to Macau's casino to change...
those underground moneychanger..

i usually go to Venetian...
just hang around the cashier area..
you will see people with waist pouches approach you.
the rate can be hit-or-miss..
but i have exchanged at 8,700 RMB for HKD10,000.
if you change more, you can get like 86,000 RMB for HKD100,000.

If you have HSBC RMB account - union pay, they offer appx 1.14.
sometime I do not carry so much cash, I just utilise the rMB credit card, 0.01 variance aint much.

ah i use that too!
i just change RMB with HSBC, keep in RMB a/c,  then pay the bills with RMB.
the only bad thing abt the card is that it doesn't have password..
dangerous in China.

Yes, you can.
I have both a HK HSBC a/c and an overseas HSBC a/c.
I sometimes transfer USD from the overseas a/c to my HK HSBC a/c, then exchange into RMB.
You can exchange RMB 20,000 daily.
But open a few more different bank a/c, you can exchange more!

If you have the cash, the premier at HSBC and Citigold will give you the rates at the time of exchange without fees.  It's pretty convenient.. esp. with HSBC, where you can see all your accounts with international currency and exchange it willy-nilly.
