I read in one of the postings that they have cover charges for Asian at some bars in Wan Chai? Is this true

I do not go to any of these bars that only wants non locals in there ...
pure discrimination no matter what their reason !!!

This has been covered many times before ... sigh.  yes, it is true, but easily solved by going with a Caucasian friend or walking in with one (stranger) from the street.

Many of the Wanchai clubs will (sometimes) charge Asians.  Try to befreind a gweilo and walk in with him.  (I have been such an escort on several occasions).  

I have lived my full life (since childhood) travelling.  So I HATE Racism....  of any kind. I have seen too much for that kinda weakass bullshit.  But HK is full of racism, and often contradictory!  Let's not pretend it isnt.

I have asked a few bouncers why Asians get charged and I've been told the same things a few time...  Gweilos spend tons of money in these clubs, whereas Asians dont.  The bars are there to make money...  that's it.  True?  I have know idea... probably not.  So what other reason could there be????

I know most members on 141 ARE Asian, so this must piss a lot of Bros off....  But even though I have mentioned this "reason" a few times I have never had anyone come back on here and say "that is not true".  Which I find odd!  Asians definitely spend TONS of cash in the high-end stores all over HK... and indeed the opposite is true in these shops:  the high-end stores would rather show a Gweilo to the exit so they can serve the next rich mainlander!

So I find the whole "Gweilo-only" in Wanchai a very, very odd thing.  I've never figured it out.

And on this topic, you'll notice that there are no chinese WGs in Wanchai either.  (or very, very few).  Why?

I can see why a local gal may not want to ruin her reputation by working in Wanchai bars... but NONE?  No Mainlanders either????   Yet mainlanders own up the Walk-UP and Hotel-Girl business....  So MOST WGs in Hong Kong ARE Chinese.  Just not in Wanchai.  Figure that out???

Some non-gweilos also act very badly.  At N3, for example, I saw Pakistanis lifting up Indo girls' dresses on the dance floor uninvited on several occasions, and jumping around crazily and bumping into people.  This is no excuse however, as not all act like that.

How about at night time? Should I go in for lunch and ask them?

Actually not all bars in WC are like this ... the curtain bars are fine, no cover charge for anyone except you're not allowed to leave without buying their girls drinks once you step inside ... its mainly the bars which makes their money by attracting domestic helpers and south american visitors that openly discriminates !

To be quite honest and I'm opening myself up for a lot of flack ... I don't have any inclinations to go to any of these bars as I don't want to bump into any DH who works for my friends and acquaintances

Almost every Chinese WG I know would go and party in LKF or TST or some higher bracket places in WC like The Tonochy rather then go to any of the WC bars ...

Also... these same Chinese Walk-up WGs  you speak of, who make 280 or 300 a pop in their day-job turn down $1500 a pop in a wanchai niteclub?

If I walked into these DH bars by myself and if its after 10 or 11 pm I would be asked to pay a cover charge,
I'm not being specific about which bar as I haven't had any reason to go in years but there are plenty of bros
who contact me after they felt they've been ripped off by the cover charges which can be different on the same
night at the same bar ...
I just tell them these places are what they are and if they felt strong enough then just don't go there !

Quite honestly, as I don't go to these bars - I only pass by, I wouldn't know the difference the pros and the DH if they are Philippino

Actually not true.  I've been approached by several Chinese girls - mostly from Shanghai.  

I believe the locals don't bother with Wanchai because they get much richer pickings in Lan Kwai Fong and other more upmarket playgrounds.And to be fair I guess they also run the risk of running into a DH who works at their home or one of their relatives homes!!!

Cover charges depend hugely on the time of day and how full they are.  Get there early, they'll beg you to come in and liven the place up.  Heck there was one place even gave free drinks ... But get there at peak time, or when there's a boat in town, even a caucasian will get cover charged unless he's recognised as a regular.

Hmm I think these are "edge cases", Dart.  They are not the norm and don't really explain the norm.

- the norm is that asians get cover-charged often in Wanchai, whereas Gweilos do not.  Why?  Is it similar to how Singapore charges locals a large cover-fee to enter the Casinos (100SNG!!) whereas tourists are free?  A way of keeping their citizens safe from vice yet still generating great revenue from outsiders?  Possible.

Would anyone care to comment on the one reason I have been given by a few bouncers?  That asians dont spend in these bars, but gweilos do.  This is the only reason I have ever been given by people who work at the bars.  Yet it doesnt sound terribly plausible.  Asians party as hard as anyone else from what I've seen.  

So again...  It is an odd thing.

My friend is asian and can get in with no cover charge. The main reason is you could be a cop undercover going there. And that is why they ask for the charge. If they see you know a regular theynlet you inno worries. Some of their best clients asians.
