Interesting report:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8505998.stm

This is a fascinating, fascinating report.

It seems that doctors suggest that this could be a psychosomatic symptom, compounded by a distrust of doctors and the viral nature of the internet. Quoting from the story:

QUOTE:
The internet has allowed large numbers of people who are frightened but have little expertise to share their fears and in the process heighten them.

In this story I am most interested in the psychological aspect because the mind is a powerful thing.  A few years ago there was a story of a man who for years could feel severe pain in an amuptated right arm - he felt that the fingers on his missing right hand were clenched so tight that it was giving him consistent migraines.  After loads of visits to doctors (who told him what he already knew, i.e. he had no right arm), one doctor finally fixed his condition by getting the guy to look at his left hand in a specially arranged mirror.

Looking in the mirror the left hand looks as if it is your right hand,  The doc then asked the patient to clench and unclench his fingers, and watch himself doing so. The patient 'saw' himselves unclenching his 'right' hand.  The migraines vanished within the day!

There was an episode of House where he treated a guy with an amputated arm. His treatment method was also using a mirror similar to what you described.

Really? Fiction following truth, it seems!

This link describes what I was talking about:

In China, unlike alot of the more developed and underdeveloped countries, HIV are mainly transmitted via IV or needle pathways.  A while back, a bunch of people in one particular town in Henan contracted HIV because alot of people were selling blood, but since the blood bank did not practice sterile techniques, alot of donors contracted HIV.  Furthermore, many blood banks used to not screen blood for blood borne antigens.  As a result, lots of blood recipients received HIV+, Hepatitis, and other blood borne illnesses.

there is always fear-mongering out there to prey on people for whatever reason.  almost no difference than being a hypochondriac, the more people read this, the more they may think "they have" the same symptoms. this starts to remind me of a psychology course i took.

That's the same method he used.

QUOTE:
House is staying with Wilson and his curiosity and meddling leads him to confront the neighbor and look into his apartment. He finds that the neighbor is a wounded veteran who lost an arm. The neighbor's anger is derived from his pain, and his pain is due to a psychosomatic attachment to a phantom limb. House solves the dispute with Wilson's neighbor by kidnapping him and forcing him to undergo V.S. Ramachandran's Mirror box therapy, curing his phantom pains in his amputated hand.

Got the recap of that part from here:

I once read about an Italian truckdriver that killed himself because he was sure to have aids only because he fucked once a hitchhiker.

Also.
I think everywhere there are lots of people that think they have aids, but don't even get tested ! Some people just hate dentists and doctors, and mostly, hearing bad news.
