Temporary storage on 141 forum...

Hi bros... Rico here...If you just bear with me ..I am going to throw a little benny now..  I have been writing a double report for the bros to read in the International reports. I have been writing the reports on and off for roughly three hours ( Inbetween work and well deserved time outs.)  I had already managed to finish one report which i looked over and edited it a bit to make it a better read.( A little bit amusing.)
I have been writing my reports on my laptop ,not the main pc...I like to keep work separate from my personal life.... As you bros might have gathered from my online time, the forum is like my second home.. My laptop ran out of battery and the link to the forum was lost...AAARRRRGGGG
I am not one to give up and then proceed to use my main pc to write my reports. I neglected work for an hour and just kept on hammering away at the keyboard.( I already decided to stay a little longer after work anyway...) Then one of my buddies msned me and we had i little natter on live messenger.. After the conversation i close the tab for windows messenger only to the horror i have close the wrong tab.. AAARRRGGGG....FUUUUUCCCKKK....
I know what the answers to my next question is going to be but i am still going ask anyway. Can there be a storage area on the forum for unfinished reports and when it is finish then can be moved to the relevant thread..
Sorry bros...Just ignore me i'm just letting off a bit of steam...

The answer, if you're typing reports over an extended time rather than in one go online, is simple... Do it offline first, using Word, Notepad, etc, then go online and paste it, duh!

I know bro... But i didn't think something like this could happen...I have written three reports already and they worked out fine.. It's just one of those things. I am still at work, i have opened a bottle of Jack daniels ,Kinda drunk.. I can seem to concentrate anymore. Maybe it's time to go home..

It happen to me too. I was out all night punting and with no sleep, i started my report. Since i was tired and the mind is slower bit and when i try to post the report. I guess i was timed out fromo the forum and lost the report. So i do my report with word first then just C/P after.

I'm very paranoid about losing stuff, so I usually highlight and copy every few minutes so that I can simply press control V if need be.  Doing on word as suggested by CL is an even better suggestion.

I think this is sound advice for writing reports. Do your report elsewhere then copy and paste. If you are me and thought " Nah this won't happen to me." I learned the lesson and am in a foul mood today. Copy and paste bros..

another advantage of the type off-line is you can use the spell checker ....

Also, I keep my own diary so you have the option to maintain control of your own memories.

One very important piece of advice:  Once you copy and paste, be sure to copy a word or two from your report to remove all trace of the whole report - just in case sb else presses control V shortly after you finish doing the report.

what you're asking for is something like what they have in most word processors - a daemon that will copy your stuff to a temp folder every so often.  I doubt if that can happen with a web app.

I would just put the post in, and say that this report is to be continued.  Might sound like a teaser, but it is what it is.

I learned my lesson early on ... on WordPerfect ... was a perfectly stable platform but for some reason that day I forgot to save versions of an important report as I went.

Lost an 8 page report (that was due the next day)
Wrote it again, took about 3 hours to redo it.  Lost it again in exactly the same way, just before printing it out.
Next time I could remember most of what I wrote, only took me 2 hrs to write it.  Lost it AGAIN!!!

Last time I wrote it, was flying, completed it in 90 min.  Finished about 3am. Got into a car, drove 90 min to deliver it so it would be on time, then drove home ...

Was back at work 8am the next day (yup, the report was a moonlighting job)

Painful.

But I still forget to save from time to time ...

I believe there is autorecover & autosave with MS word if that will help you to potentially not lose any files in mid-writing

Yup, Bro Twice sums it up - happened to everyone of us. Pretty frustrating when you are done and clikc on post just to realise that you timed out.

Bro Thai's advice is valid. An embarassing moment almost happened when I finished my report once and then closed everything. Then my sister was using MS Word and suddenly I thought about this and quickly said I need to use the computer for 5 minutes - URGENT. And true enough, Control-V, the whole report came out - urghhh.. imagine the disaster!!!

Yes its one of the way to overcome with that problem. But its not always possible to mail after finishing every two paragraphs. It was too a bit of a pain.

If you don't want traces on your desktop, you can write it in Google Docs or a similar "cloud" application. In fact, if some tech person had a lot of time, they could integrate Google Docs into the forum software, so you could write a report in Docs, then paste over.

It's happened to me many times. Quite often I'm caught out by that brief response which ends getting a little longer than I thought, hit submit and ..... gone.

When I type directly into 141 these days I usually "copy" the text before I hit submit. That way if the system loses it I still have it in temp space and can just re hit reply tab and do "paste". Just what I will do with this post (it keeps the little emicons too).

Hey rozordermit, thanks for your first post and welcome to the Forum ...

... not sure I fully understand the point your trying to make.  What is your question?
