You seem to have a lot of emotion invested in this superiority of Hong Kong versus the Mainland feel-good story. That's so very pre-1997. You're standing in place while the world moves on bro.

OK, you know more on the situation.  It's still kind of funny so why many mainlanders still try to get into HK. Strange, HK people looking up to mainlanders now ? HK has so much freedom.

I did say ...

Most of the people who wants to come to HKG are those who wants to join their spouses.  Some others are the rich mainlanders who wants to bring out their $$, (and they do NOT necessary stay any amount of time in Hong Kong) whilst of course we get "visits' by our mainland female cousins who just wants to spend 2 weeks hooking here.

And how many Hong Kongers now go up to the Mainland to work/look for opportunities?

Even the Lure of the Good Ole You Asssss of AYEEE passport nowadays has lost a LOT of its previous lustre as they now see that the opportunity is right there at their own door stepss!

Old school Hong Kongers will remember the term "ah chon" referring to a China bumpkin, now it's all turned around.  When you go to China, they call Hong Kongers "gong chon" and Americans "fah kay Chon"  we are now the bumpkins.  But in reality, China can do this not because of sophistication but because they have more money, period.

I thought that a better transliteration is "A"Charn - only now the Mainland guys refers to us as Foo Ji Charn - meaning "underwater" (like in financially!) bumpkins!!

If you'll be spending time all in HK, then got to learn cantonese, as you'll just get along better with 99% of the population.
And remember, you got to listen to announcements, watch TV, etc, everyday stuff, which is all cantonese.

If you going to china, then different story entirely.

If you visiting WG a lot in HK, then you got to learn elementary Mandarin, which is not hard at all after you got some cantonese under your belt.

I may be biased coming from a mainland family that moved to Taiwan during the war, (and then to the US where I was born) but I think the Mandarin spoken in Taiwan is pretty pleasing to the ear. The Northern Putonghau on the other hand hurts my ears a bit

I would have to say in general that the Mainland is still somewhat backwards when it comes to manners and public behavior. I mean there are rude people in the US and Hong Kong as well, but just take a look at how the 'supposedly' higher class people on the mainland behave? It's weird seeing someone wearing 1k plus suits hocking loogies on the floor, or a classy looking lady picking her ass in public.(all witnessed in China) Just look at how most China Mainland businessmen behave in Hong Kong.......pretty embarrassing. Of course it's not really their fault as there was a period were the civilization and character of the Chinese people were almost wiped out by the insane Communist policies of the 60's and 70's. (cultural rev, great leap, etc....) China will be back in 20 years or so

China is a very big country. The Mainlanders with the rude country-bumpkin manners might be just that - country bumpkins; whereas the younger, better-educated inhabitants of the larger cities like Shanghai and Beijing are probably much more sophisticated than the Mainland Chinese of just 20 years ago.

The true country bumpkins are usually quite nice, it's normally the growing number of country bumpkins who got rich and think they are better than everyone else who annoy me.

I also prefer Chinese dialects to Mando. Canto, Taiwanese, and even Hakka feel much more expressive than Putonghua

Chinese are very adaptable - even going back to the 18th century and the immigration to Gold Mountain.

The same can be said for present day Chinese - and the old cliche about how Chinese businessmen acts in Hong Kong is very rapidly being replaced by the sophisticated, serious and monied world citizen who graces some of the finest tables of Hong Kong.... Well mannered and aware.

Being bad mannered whilst in China - now that's another matter!! You ever tried being nice and genteel at a China KTV?  And the classy lady in the form hugging outfit - you ever figure out what she's doing for a living?

Just my POV

Siu jia, wa ga li gong, li jin sui!

God! Taiwanese is an awful sounding language. Mandarin when spoken with a Taiwanese accent - that drops all the retroflex sounds - also grates on the ear. (wo bu dzdao ni zai suo semma)

The Mandarin spoken in Jilin, however, is quite pleasing to the ear with none of the garbled sounds that characterize the true Beijing accent.

I've met a lot of non-Asian guys in Hong Kong and I've never met even one who could have a conversation in Cantonese, let alone understand the TV.   They say it's too difficult and they don't have time to learn. Some have been here 20 - 30 years and speak only English. I have to wonder whether it's worth trying to learn it.

The non-Asian guys I met who can converse in Canto seemed to be old white guys who live in Kowloon or NT. None of them lived on the island.

But there are nowadays alot of non-Asians who can converse in Mando really well, even better than the local HK Chinese.

I found thatin HK, if you know english you will definately get by.  But it is most beneficial to know some Cantonese in HK.  But once I step footin China, mandarin is definately used by everybody.  In SZ, guangchow and DG I found that lots of people still spoke cantonese, but head further north and then mandarin is the major language used.  I have lots of trouble communicating with some WG's cuz the ones that I have been with only speak mandarin.

Gotta get some mandarin classes....

actually, the only areas that I have troubles with in Guangdong Province with lack of Cantonese is in SZ outside of Luohu, and in Zhuhai.  Well, DG too, to some extent, but at least the hotel people pretty much can speak Cantonese. Everywhere else, no problems with using Cantonese.  This wasn't the case 15 years ago.  15 years ago, I had no issues getting around SZ using Cantonese.  All the northern migration turned both SZ and ZH into primarily Mandarin-speaking.

As far as language is concerned, being in SZ feels like being in Taipei - almost everybody speaks Mandarin. A hotel guy I spoke to said by his estimate, 90% of the SZ population doesn't speak Cantonese.

I understand the reason - all the migration from other parts of China - but it's kinda weird having this huge Mandarin-speaking city stuck between the two Cantonese speaking regions of HK and Guangzhou.

Sometimes.....

I wonder if all these SYT's are really as dumb as they make themselves out to be.

I mean - most of them speak at LEAST 2 languages - Putonghua and their Village/provincial dialect - and many also pick up Cantonese. In fact a few actually even manage to have some english under their belt.

Compared to the problems that lots of us have in even just learning Putonghua/Cantonese.

I know that ability to pick up languages is probably NOT an indicator of a person's IQ - but I still gotta wonder about these SYT's
