Can anyone recommend a shop to buy a hypersim card for a docomo phone? Do they let you try before you buy?

I think cheaper and easier to buy an unlocked Motorola from Fortress (around HKD150). You can then use it as your "travel phone".

Do you know the model? I don't want to have some crap phone. If I buy a phone in Hong Kong, I'd like to use it in Japan also.

I saw a small phone shop that was selling unlocked Docomo phones from Japan.  The guys were a bit rude but apparently they can change the programming to allow Chinese input.  Maybe you can drop by and show your phone to see if they can do something for you.

The shop is on the ground floor of the President Shopping Centre, directly across from shops #528-532 Jaffe Road, Causeway Bay.  It is on the corner of the building.  President Shopping Centre is next to World Trade Centre.  I would recommend you go at night so you can see all the bright lights of the shop.  All the docomo phones are in the front window display.

Like a lot of bro's previously mentioned.  I would just pick up a unlocked possibly 2nd hand phone while in HK instead of jumping through all the hoops of unlocking a docomo phone.  I was in Tokyo and my friend wanted to pick up a JDM phone for the states.  The rep there said they do not sell phones without contracts, and if you don't live in Tokyo, they won't even set you up on a phone.

I'm not in HK yet. I'll be there on May 24th. Could you be so king enough to send a street view for me?

Ok, here are two streetviews of the shop's location.  In the streetview, it states approximate location as 528 Jaffe Road.  That address is actually the address of the shop directly across from this telephone shop.  

The 1st view gives you an idea of the end of Jaffe Road before one enters the private access road of the World Trade Centre.  The shop is on the left hand corner.

The 2nd view is a close-up of that left hand corner.  The shop is just past those shuttered gates of the mini retail mall.  The shop display window is just behind that street sign.  Also you can see a shop signboard that is in blue, white, and grey with black Chinese characters.

I cannot get a better view as I presume the google van could not enter the private access road to get a better view.

In this shopping area, the shops do not open until after 11am or 12pm as in this area shops close a bit later at night.  

Good luck and tell me if the service and selection is good as I am also interested in those docomo phones too.

Doghead, I just got back from Hong Kong. I'm sorry but I couldn't make it to that shop.....It's a long story. I was able to get my Docomo phone working with a Hypersim. My cousin took me to a shop in Mong Kok and I paid $250 HKD for the sim. The sales staff was really nice cause she let me try it before I paid for it. It worked well while I was there. I could only make calls on a pre-paid sim card. The SMS didn't work. I hope this helps anyone who is interested in Docomo phones.

go to 'sin tat' in Mongkok, whole centre full of phones, I bought a docomo from there and the hypersim didnt work properly, took it back and they changed the hypersim for me. So good so far. I think the hypersims are about hkd200

Will a prepaid HK phone work on the mainland?  Last time I was in China I used AT&T International Roaming, which worked fine in China, but not at all in HK.

Or if I buy a new prepaid sim card in mainland China, will it work on the HK phone?  I know there are dual sim phones or adapters, but those are more expensive.
