Musky Members can award points!!

I've only recently discovered lowly musky members such as myself are able to award other members of the forum what's called acceptance points. I discovered this quite by chance when I inadvertently clicked the rating tag at the bottom of a page report. It only allows you to award a plus or minus 1 point, but this is better than nothing. Might I suggest all fellow musky members out there show that we are not part of the stingy old guard and start awarding points for good reports in the non HK forums. Geoduck's "Quanlin - Best Kept Secret" report, for example, is excellent and well deserving of karma/acceptance points.

By the same standards we need to be proactive in giving negative points for silly one liners that some, particularly newbies, are want to do to try and build up there standing. I have restricted myself to only "negging" those who who try this in reports that I have initiated, but I would hope everyone else out there will do the same. We can't always rely on the moderators to sort them out.

What do you mean by the stingy old guard on this forum

Anyways, there was an announcement not long ago on the forum affairs about each members' ranking on the forum on what they can access and reward fellow bros on the site.

Hope your words of encouragement will empower others to do the same on rewarding reports from all sections to promote contribution and less lurking!!!

Given the number of changes to the board, the sticky might be obsolete in some places.  It's good new that members can still give acceptance points. I'm not sure what the maximum per day is if that changed.

Musky Member acceptance points are just as good as anyone else's, and just as welcome . . . we would appreciate it very much if you could wash them first before awarding them . . . you know . . . get that 'musky' smell off!

I didn't do it.  Really I didn't.

There is also the view that Acceptance points have quite some value. These are totally subject to the forum members and cannot be increased by a member just making posts.

We have seen quite a few members regain their Karma by flooding posts but this is not possible with "Acceptance". If a member achieves a large negative Acceptance it is very difficult for them to recover credibility.

Yeah ... it's been covered ...

Acceptance is a way for you to:-
  voice your vote and
directly influence the direction and quality of the Forum
without spamming the forum with one-line "thank you" posts, which are not allowed.

Actually it has a BIG impact.

Reports and pictures require hard work, commitment, and a sense of supporting the community.  The difference between a good report with a lot of useful detail and a lazy one is simply the attitude and motivation of the member who writes it.  That only happens when people feel it's worth their effort.  People, who respond to a simple "thank you" or a "no thank you" much more than they respond to other forms of reward.

If you like what you read, award A

If you don't like what you read, award -A

You will make a difference and contribute to the growth evolution of the forum

And if you REALLY want to make a difference, start writing the sort of reports and posts you like to read yourself.

I think the acceptance points are less tangible than the karma points. Most people want the karma points to increase their RA. Therefore, the acceptance points don't appear to have a direct impact on what you can or cannot do on this forum. The most obvious thing that acceptance does IMO, is that if I see someone with a high points, then it probably means that forum members value their posts.

I guess the confusing part potentially is everyone has their own standard as to when they should award karma or acceptance points, and in some cases both. Because of its subjective nature, inconsistent application and it's less obvious impact compared to karma points, acceptance points to many don't seem to have a big impact.

Totally agree...I've read a lot of the threads but always been shy to respond in case I get knocked off Karma or Acceptance points. I only contribute when I have something constructive to say, hence my slow rise to musky member (probably in a month or so), but I don't mind as I would rather write a report warning or encouraging other bros to walk away/try a certain HG, cos I know the favour would be returned later.

Looking forward to "marking reports"!

Of course it's subjective.  But subjective or indirect does not mean small.

And the WHOLE POINT is that the worthiness of a post to receive A is NOT some sort of predefined standard.  It most certainly IS YOUR OWN PERSONAL STANDARD and YOUR SUBJECTIVE VIEW.

The collective impact of Acceptance points is subtler than Karma, but nonetheless very big.

Hey, I just gave you an A point ... how did you feel when you saw the PM?

That's my point: most people react positively to positive feedback.

If you want the forum to continue as actively as it is today, and to see it improve over time, you MUST tell contributors any time you like what you they wrote.  They are human.  Like you.  And by far the majority want to know if they're writing stuff you like or not.

A is a very genuine way to reinforce what you like, and discourage what you don't like, precisely because it isn't attached to any other agenda (such as access rights and the right to award K).

And attracted me to also give you points (would have been karmas - but I ran out of 'em today!)

The point being that its human nature to go with the flow and to ALSO agree when a post is particularly atractive or obnoxious - and to also award like-minded + - points.

Your A point awards can and do influence others to follow suit - and if's a senior, to award K's i/o just A's

That's a great point too SEAJ ... kinda like A's get "moderated" by a senior bro.

I can ABSOLUTELY concur that A can and does turn into K ... if I see a lot of A on a post that I like, it does influence me to award K, and if I was already inclined to award K I would award more.

So keep making those ratings, your bros will benefit, and ultimately what goes around comes around.

This is exactly what I was getting at, Acceptance points being subtler is what gives the impression it's less meaningful. Please bear in mind I'm not say it's not meaningful, just it's subtle in nature and seemingly no direct impact. I guess I would say the impact is more implicit versus explicit when comparing acceptance and karma.

Yes - you pointed out correctly that Karmas are more explicit and ARE the points most of us here try to "attract"

On the other hand, before replying to a post, I oft-times look at a poster's number of acceptance points - especially the ratio of his posts to the number of acceptance points received, and of course, also if its in negative territory.

I do this to make a quick decision as to what kind of poster he's LIKELY to be.  Not a perfect science of course - but I figure that acceptance points are more likely to be awarded by newbies and those members NOT able to give karmas yet - and thus are really "heart felt points."

Negative acceptance pointed guys indicate to me that they HAD been in some kind of transgressive behaviour and had thus got docked.  And the fact that he remains in negative territory indicates that he never redeemed himself.

Just IMHO

SEAJ

EDIT
Ps. BTW - I do truly appreciate ALL points that I get awarded - whether K's or A's.  Note - I am NOT karma whoring here - just stating a fact
