Even after being out for a few weeks the iPhone4 has a buzz. The international introduction is around the corner.  And the scarcity factor is the US is brilliant marketing.  Gotta had it to them.

Looks like the new mongering phone is being slammed by CR's recommendation/verdict.

Too funny, the recommended fix for signal loss is of all things "duct tape".

All the press on the antenna is not hurting sales.  It will be interesting to see how it goes with the next big release of phone.

I'm not sure that I agree. I remember seeing and article, don't remember the source, which basically pointed out that 70-80% of the sales were to people who were upgrading their iphones, be it gen 1 through to 3GS. If that's the case, then that's not really a lot of sales growth. Therefore, for the non-Apple folks this report by CR will hurt sales, to what degree will be determined by how quickly Apple can fix it, and CR will change their non-recommendation.

We will know when the demand and sales numbers come out. Up to this point the buzz is still pretty strong.  There might be a group of people, who don't have an iPhone now, who say they won't change until the next version of iPhone comes out and all the bugs are fixed.  They will wait along time. Not sure if it will ever actually be resolved in a way that is 100 percent fixed, short of a design change.

There is a video attached to this article which shows the reception problem which occurs when you cover the bottom left hand corner of the iphone and the bumper you need to buy to address it.

If Apple recalls iPhone 4, cost could hit $1.7 billion
July 15, 2010 - 9:34AM
The possibility that Apple's new iPhone could have a faulty antenna has fueled speculation that the popular phone could be recalled, and one analyst has pegged the potential cost at US$1.5 billion ($1.7 billion).
Recall rumours were prompted by Consumer Reports' announcement Monday that it couldn't recommend the handset because its tests confirmed large drops in reception when the phone is held in a certain way.
When Apple's shares slid nearly 5 per cent on Tuesday, Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi issued a report saying that although a "full product recall of the iPhone 4 would be highly unlikely," the occurrence would end up costing Apple a whopping US$1.5 billion.
"Apple's image — and potentially iPhone sales — could be compromised if Apple does not explicitly — and constructively — address the issue of what it believes is wrong with the phone and how it will address it," Sacconaghi said in the statement.
Apple sold a record-breaking 1.7 million iPhone 4 handsets in the first three days of the product's launch last month, but it received immediate complaints from consumers that the device dropped four or five signal bars when holding it near the bottom left corner.
The new iPhone's antenna was designed for the first time to have a steel band that wraps around the device. The California-based company initially said a drop in signal was normal when holding any mobile handset but later issued a statement saying the problem was due to an error in displaying the signal-strength bars in all four of its phone's models.
It suggested users could avoid the issue by either not holding it in that particular way or by purchase a case, or "bumper," for around US$30 ($34) each.
Sacconaghi said Apple should issue free bumpers to all of its current iPhone 4 users and future purchasers, which he estimated would cost the company US$1 or less per unit.
"While it would force Apple to 'acknowledge' a design issue with the iPhone, we believe that consumers are increasingly aware of the antenna issue, and remedying it rather than dismissing or ignoring it appears most appropriate," he said.
Apple did not return phone calls or emails seeking comment.
After Sacconaghi finished scolding the company for its lack of transparency, he ended the report with some encouraging words:
"We believe that the antenna crisis will either pass or, more likely, that Apple will address it directly."

Thanks for the info. I would not be buying this until everything is resolved. I am very happy with my old iPhone 3G and Blackberry. The new iPhone OS which I've installed has really slowed down my older model despite resetting the phone a number of times.

Heard that there will be an apple new conference today orctpmorroe to address the antenna issue.  It is not clear whether this is now coming from consumers who have the new iPhone or is in responecto consumer reports.  Need to check YouTube to see what videos are out there on this also c

The press conference is this Friday (HK time will be Saturday) and not today to announce iOS 4.1 and address the reception issue.

The release in Australia for late July has now been delayed indefinitely due mainly to the signal loss issues. There's some speculation that Apple may issue a recall of all the iPhone 4's sold.

I hope Apple announce a permanent fix to this problem instead of feed us a bunch of crappy excuses.  I've generally supported their products as they have been quite innovative, but I'm sick of their corporate arrogance...

I know 3-4 people whose iPhone 3's crashed upon loading iOS4. If others haven't done that yet, I would recommend waiting until Apple seriously addresses some of these problems.

The new release will decrease the reporting of the signal strength.  the bars will be different heights.  it seems as if the amount of bars reflect reality in terms of signal strenght but that the height of the bars is optics only

Anyone betting on a recall for this?

My guess is they won't do a recall, and instead try some kind of fix. A little piece of professional looking "iDuct"   tape to better shield the antenna from interference.

There have been suggestions that they should give everybody a bumper.  That sounds like a low cost option even though they charge $35 for it. The iDuct sounds like a good fix. If they don't offer it, you should sell it

I wonder how hard it was for Jobs to say this:

Apple CEO on iPhone trouble: `We're not perfect'

Looks like the link is being updated with new info, as the conference call is going on.

At least Steve admitted there is a problem and that they're addressing it. Perhaps it's good to hold back on buying the new iPhone 4 until they can really make it perfect. Nothing wrong with the 3GS particularly when the price has been reduced.
