Next world cup... The world champions defend their title at home?. What a seller.

If Brazil wins. Technically, all world cup champions need to qualify but given the world cup will be held in Brazil then its an added bonus that they don't need to qualify.

Octopus makes predictions

A UK-born octopus makes prediction that Germany will beat Argentina. This little critter has got a lot of predictions right including the Germany/England game

As of now, Germany certainly look as the team to beat in this competition. However, I really want Argentina to win this, andI have a feeling that they just will!

Cant wait for the germany argentina match!!

I'm surprised Argentina are fairly strong favourites given the form and class of both sides seem quite evenly matched. I've got my heart, wallet and fantasy side all backing the Krauts.

how do you say that Germany "looks as the team to beat"?  They lost one game already to Serbia.  Ghana had more scoring opportunities against Germany than against the US.  And who knows what would have happened had Neuer not won an Academy Award for his play against Lampard and England.  Argentina has looked way more impressive at this point.  As has Brazil and the Netherlands. Germany doesn't have Ballack.  But having said all that, I'd look for a great game between the two.

Germany played with only 10 men against Serbia, if I recall.  Pretty hard to win under those circumstances - just ask Australia who had to do it twice.

yup - Germany played with 10 man against Serbia for almost an hour. They were the better team but missed a couple of good scoring chances including a penalty kick. you cannot win without scoring goals... football is that simple...

I hope Argenina overcome Germany ... would love to see a Argentina vs Brazil final.  It's gonna be a win for a South American team this year, I feel.

JeSun - you may blame the referee or linesman for the goal that wasn't but not Neuer. Or if you like to blame a goal keeper try Robert Green. Without his blunder England had won the group stage and played Ghana in the last sixteen....

TD - from my point of view the perfect World Cup would continue like this...
Germany wins against Argentina in Penatles - kicks home Spain in the Semi's (revenge for last Euro) and in the finals deny our beloved neighbours from Holland once again....

... reality check.... it will be Argentina or Brazil in the final

How about rooting for a new World Cup Winner like Spain or even Holland. Spain has been undercheiving for so many World Cups Finals and Holland came so close twice in consecutive Finals in 1978 and 1974 losing to Argentina and West Germany.

My mind is telling me a South American Team winning this World Cup but I am hoping for a new World Cup Winner like Spain.

Yeah Germany lost the 2nd group game, and wasn't particularly impressive in its 1-0 win in its 3rd game. And if Lampard's goal had counted, all the momentum would have been with England and they wouldn't have sent so much men forward to get caught on the counter.

Argentine on the other hand breezed through all its games so far.

I will disagree with your assessment of Holland... and I'm a damn Holland fanatic. They just don't seem all that confident in their play and have not looked impressive in any of their games.

Don't think you can blame Neuer for England not getting the second goal either. That was all on the ref/linesman! Granted England should have gotten the goal and made it 2-2 BUT I did not think they played well anyway and deserved to go out. As usual, they played like shit on the big stage... hopefully their younger players will do better in 2 years time at the Euros.

I would like to see Spain win it. Can't help siding with Nando and Xabi Ain't So Shabby... In fact, I'm still waiting for him to try one of his preposterous and audacious shots from inside his own half!!

I hope Robert Green doesn't stay in the current squad. He's not up to standard at all .

But why not talk about the Slovenia game? For all the talk about the improved performance, it wasonly a slender 1-0 win. If England had scored just 1 more goal, they would have won the group. When it comes down to it, the faullt lies with the England players themselves, not the referee.

Hey C-L;

You are so right. I think it is about time (twelve years since France) that a New Champion join the exclusive club of World Cup Winners. Presently, as the form book goes, it looks like a Argentina vs Brazil Final but you never know, like the saying goes, the ball is round. Let's support the underdog but Spain, being ranked 2nd in the FIFA ranking, ain't an underdog.

Why not hope that Spain will be the Champion of the World for the very first time or even the Netherlands. I am just that obstinate and am stubborn as a donkey.

Lastly, I hope Argentina do not win it otherwise, Diego Armando Maradona will be even more arrogant

Agree about Maradonna - with a win in the World Cup he will start a new round of verbal fighting with Pele, Beckenbauer, Platini and the oh so bad media people.

Talking about a brand new world champion, if had to pick a new one from the last eight, it would be Ghana. Logical reasons, none. World Cup on the African Continent should have an African Champion....

Wouldn't that be a fairy tale coming true - Ghana winning the World Cup. However, it is probably very unlikely, not to throw cold water on the Ghana team. If the Ghanian were to beat the Uruguayan, it would already be a big accomplishment. Man! 1st African Team to be in the World Cup last 4.

My prediction for this game is Uruguay to win on penalty kicks. Scored draw during normal time and scoreless during extra-time. Anyone with me on this?
