I'm actually surprised they didn't introduce this earlier, seems like a natural fit for an authoritarian police state. It will come to HK, just a matter of when, they will use the same excuse that all governments of any political persuasion use. Law and Order.

actually many other countries in the world are doing the same thing (ie Italy), so it is quite common that you need to get register first before you get a no name sim card. but the big question now is because you can get loads of sensitive info from ID#, so the issue is how do they protect and store the information.

Hope this policy will not come to HK though....

Happens all over the world the UK tried to implement it but failed.

I think the international sims will defeat this though, on my big trip several other riders had an international sim where it was based in romania, it would give you coverage everywhere but India you had to load it with credit online though.

Yes, they already do this in alot of other coutries. I read the article today in the newspaper and was a bit surprised when I thought about it that China hasn't already done this.

Many countries in Europe like the above poster said already do this. I too hope it doesn't come to HK, but i'm sure it will in time.

Hopefully if you have one already and as long as you keep "recharging" it then it would be grandfather rule will take effect.

Seems to make sense given the crazy world we live in.  The only time it really becomes relevant is when it is essential to track down a terrorist.  So keeping it where people can't use phones for evil purposes is a good thing.  Otherwise Boone likely is looking at your phone records.

Won't work. At some point any numbers under the old system would be "turned off".

The kennichi international sim would seem to be the best approach although I do wonder if they couldn't somehow monitor or block them.
