Apple tackles iPhone glitches
Apple claims to have solved widespread faults ranging from sluggish performance to unreliable proximity sensors that have infuriated many of its iPhone users in recent months.
The fault lies with version 4.0 of the operating system, which came pre-installed in the iPhone 4 and was also widely adopted by users of previous models.
Technical problems ranged from a sharp dip in the performance of the iPhone 3G to a failure in the proximity sensors in the iPhone 4 which caused phone calls to terminate suddenly while the user was talking.
Last week Apple chief executive Steve Jobs flagged that iOS 4.1 would soon be released this week to fix the iPhone 4 proximity sensor problems, sluggish iPhone 3G performance, and some Bluetooth connectivity issues.
The early signs are that the proximity problem have been fixed, said Anthony Agius, editor of the MacTalk.com.au forum.
“People [in the MacTalk forum] who have said had problems are saying it doesn't happen any more,” he said.
The iPhone 3G performance issue also appears to have been resolved with many users on Apple's own user forum reporting improved performance in their handsets following the upgrade.
“Not sure if it's faster than 3.x but MAN, it's a pleasure to use this 3G again with 4.1,” wrote one.
However some others were taking a more cautious approach.
“I'm still fearful to try 4.1. I've been tempted to smash my iPhone into a wall more than once since switching to 4.0.1. The keyboard is so slow sometimes it's ridiculous. Safari takes FOREVER to load. Apps crash pretty much every time. Especially if I've used them longer than two minutes,” wrote another.
Apple has also bundled a bunch of new features into the upgrade, bringing additional functions to iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPod touch (second generation and above).
“It will give user access to Game Centre, high dynamic range (HDR) photos on iPhone 4, the ability to upload HD video to YouTube and Mobile Me over Wi-Fi on iPhone 4, additional support for AVRCP-supported accessories including next and previous track control and FaceTime calling direct from Favourites,” Apple said.

Its true that in the US jailbreaking an iphone is now legal.
Also legal: Apple not honoring warranties on, or supporting, jailbroken phones.

So fed up with all the apple bullshit.... all the users who I know would def not buy an Iphone if it could not be jailbroken

not sure why apple doesn't allow the freedom to its users and they have to be such bitches about it

Apple to end free iPhone case program
Apple said it will end its free iPhone case giveaway at the end of September, saying the antenna problem was smaller than the company originally thought.
However, Apple said it will to continue to provide a free case to the "small percentage of iPhone 4 users" who need one.
Apple announced in July it would give iPhone 4 cases to anyone who requested one, after some users reported reception problems. The matter was dubbed "Antennagate".
Even as the company announced the case program, it maintained there was nothing wrong with the iPhone 4 and that reception issues were a problem shared by the entire smartphone industry.
In an announcement on its website late last week Apple said it is discontinuing the free case – or bumper – program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, as it had originally planned to do.
"We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought," the announcement said. "A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free."
Users experiencing antenna problems should contact the company to receive a case, Apple said.
An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment beyond the statement on its website.
After the June 24 launch of the iPhone 4, some users reported drastically reduced signal strength when they held the touchscreen phone a certain way.
The issue snowballed and turned into a public relations nightmare for the company.
Apple was forced to call a news conference to address the issue in July, where Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said the problem had been blown out of proportion, but issued the free case offer.
The cases help improve signal strength on the smartphone, experts say, by preventing users from touching certain parts of the iPhone's antenna, which wraps around the device.

The case is nice but uneccesary.  Wonder if the company strategy in the antenna crisis will be a case study on how to handle corporate adversity.  The antenna issue is definitely off the radar ad has been for awhile

Yes that may be because of the free case neutralising the problem. If they cancel the free case it could come back to bite them on the bum.

My thinking is that, the savvy guys will complain wether there's a problem or not, hey presto free case. As for the rest, (the silent majority) they'll either not notice the problem or they'll put up with it without complaining or buy the case. Problem solved, extra million for apple's bottom line.
