I'm not planning to change my occupation soon but I'm curious on the rent WG pay for their small rooms. Obviously the rent is more about the location (i.e. district & located in a 141 cluster) than the size of the room.

Do you have any info on how much they pay? This is not something that I would ask directly to a WG because I don't want to be nosy and usually don't talk about work. I'm also wondering if they could use any place to do business or if there's restrictions either by the government/city planing or triads? That alone could mean a substantial premium.

If you ask directly, a girl might tell you she has a choice between paying her 'boss' $400 per day or $100 cut from each client.  She might also explain which one she chooses depends on how much her period affects her work.  Or she might not.


If you check the HK Laws online you'll see that anyone old enough and of a sound mental state is allowed to do sex work in their own private premises.  In fact, that's pretty much the only place they're allowed to do work, since noone is allowed to run a business that involves any other person providing sex for money.  Don't take my word for it I'm not a lawyer: either consult a legal expert and get a written opinion, or read the law yourself.

I was simply curious of their recurring costs because I was wondering what was their break even point and how much a popular girl would make (excluding, tips, gifts etc.), how much a 100/200/500 tip represents for them.

That's good if they can do business without having the "underworld" racketing them, which could be done by simply forcing WG to go to specific buildings.


I don't like to talk with them about their job or situation, I feel like it brings them down - maybe some funny anecdotes but that's it.
I usually bring the conversation to lighter topics like food, travel, where they're from or where I'm from etc. and it can give me ideas if I want to make them a gift.

On the assumption that this is correct, and there's no reason not to believe jchow88888, then the rent of a 141 room is really the same as any other room in a tenement.

Let's think about this. Most WGs work out of a room that was originally a larger apartment but then divided into smaller rooms (so that the landlord can collect more rent). This isn't any different from so many other buildings with residences in Hong Kong. When I lived in Mong Kok, my room (I can't really call it an apartment) was exactly like that. With this in mind there's no reason to think that a 141 room would be any more or less expensive in rent cost than any other room for rent. This would make sense to explain why 141s in Wan Chai, Causeway and Sheung Wan have higher rates than the 141s in Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po and Kwun Tong -- the cost of rent for residential buildings in the former are higher than in the latter.

And lastly, you can tell who are the North Americans and who are the Europeans here based on who's saying "rent" or "let."

as we know, you almost invariable have to pay everything you earn to get that, and even that is often insufficient!

I agree to a certain extent. but being in a 'prime' area for 141 can bring clients to walk by, the is definitely going to be a premium on the rent. as opposed to being your neighbour in a subdivided flat in the middle of a non 141 area.

I stayed in an ex WG apartment in Sun Kai Mansion Wanchai over Christmas 2012/2013 and was paying HK$7,000 per month + power + water. not sure how much prices have increased over this time.

It's funny that you mention this. I remember when looking for an apartment in 2013 that I came across Sun Kai Mansion and a couple of rooms that were formerly used by WGs but since renovated. I knew because I'd been in one of those rooms numerous times in 2011! I'll say that some of the 141 rooms in SKM back then weren't bad and totally livable.

I've been reliably informed that the rent in a good upper floor in Fuji Building is 25k per month. Reliably as in I asked and was told that's what they were paying.
