Notice the key word 'pay'. It's a favorite word in their vocabulary, probably the second favorite is 'My Heart (Corazón)'. BAIII should apologize to the members of the HK families too and should go visit HK and Beijing personally and not send his VP. He probably cannot take humiliation well and thus will never learn.

My sincerest condolences to those who lost their lives or who will be forever scarred mentally or physically by this tragedy. This could so easily have been avoided.

The level of incompetence shown is astounding; and not just by the police but by the government too. I enjoyed reading JckJr's post as it really reflects on how many missed opportunities and poor decisions on so many occasions. And it wasn't as if these werent obvious in the first place. It took 11 hours!! In the end Mendoza is dead and 8 tourists, when it shouldve been Mendoza dead and 0 hostages had the right decisions been made.

If lack of training and equipment is their lame excuse then I would hate to think their handling of a state of emergency, a terrorist attack or some other big incident. What pisses me off is when the army offered to help they didn't utilize it and made a farce of the whole thing. Ridiculous

they held a moment of silence... its quite sad, especially the canadian family where it seems it could be just the mom surviving while the son is still trying to survive.

I don't think we can stand the perpetual smirk on his face !

Like I suspected, they had a elite anti terrorist squad on stand by, and they were near the bus but wasn't deployed !

Like I said, the gunman might have pulled the trigger but it was the inept Philippine government that killed the hostages !

Like I suspected, they had a elite anti terrorist squad on stand by, and they were near the bus but wasn't deployed !...

they had 2 better teams on standby. one team was an elite commando team from the military, while the other team is dubbed "Super SWAT" and is highly trained by similar SWAT teams from the US and UK, and better equiped with gas masks, plastic charges, and Level 4 body armor.

they were not deployed due to politics. the ground commander was police, and police in general takes care of domestic threats, and he didnt want the military involved. the Super SWAT wasnt deployed because that team's commander was the previous Manila SWAT commander and the new SWAT commander didnt want him to take his job away.

That is so sick. The new SWAT commander was responsible for the deaths of the hostages and should not only be fired but also prosecuted for incompetence, involuntary manslaughter. As for the police chief, he should be sacked as well for incompetence.

I disagree with that.  Philippines police and military are so incompetant, I don't think it matters who gets kidnapped.

There are Western foreigners, including Americans, who get kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim terrorist group in southern Philippines.  The Philippines army can't do shit about it.  People get kidnapped and forced to pay huge ransoms.

The country is completely fucked up.  Other than fucking girls there for cheap, there is nothing good about the Philippines.

that's a pretty strong statement there that i take exception to. every place has its fuck ups, even the great US of A.

condemning an entire country as good for nothing except to fuck cheap girls is a crass generalization.

I live here as well, and I don't need more than my hands to count the good things in the Philippines.

While there is more to the Philippines than cheap places to monger, I have to admit that there are serious shortcomings to the country that a foreigner can't ever accept.

The one responsible for this complete screw up has to go up all the way to the President.  In International crisis situations he must be on top of the situation, if not in charge of the entire operation.  It doesn't matter if he comes from a military background or not.

The excuses of the current administration are damning and indicative of the next 6 years.

His political advisors need to be shot.  He should have made statements throughout the crisis, and immediately afterwards should have admitted his responsiblity for the situation, and posed a solution (like a new elite force) to address future concerns.

Instead, he stayed invisible, made excuses, blamed the past administration (while she addressed multiple crisis wth the same police/army forces), and belatedly offered insincere apologies and solutions.

The Philippines is admittedly a poor place to live at the moment.
