She didn't even know them very well but friends and family would make comments on her figure that she found too direct and somewhat rude. In North America friends and family are generally more polite and err on the side of caution on topics like this. But in HK they were straight to the point, feelings be damned. For reference, she was very a very normal size by western standards which made her big compared to most HK girls

In N.America, it is felt that it is the pervasive atmosphere of political correctness that has allowed the obesity epidemic to explode.  For example, doctors cannot freely tell a patient that he/she is fat because the doctor may hurt the patient's feelings.     The doctor has to tell the patient in a very indirect way that really doesn't leave a strong impression on the patient to act to arrest the weight gain.  So in this case peer pressure can be a good tool to make sure everyone stays relatively slim.

Especially regarding the inability to stem the tide of the rising obesity epidemic in North America(the US in particular) However, sometimes I feel the "accepted" standard for thinness in Hong Kong is too extreme. Many HK girls are much too thin(by my standards anyways) and anything above this is deemed by HK and Chinese society to be fat. Girls that are considered an ideal curvy body shape in North America would be considered overweight in HK. Oh well, guess we just have to live with the differing standards. Doesn't really affect me but many of the western girls I've dated have certainly felt somewhat peeved
