If you want used (and new) budget phones, goto Mongkok - Sin Tat building
If you really want cheap used budget phones, goto Sham Sui Po

Beware the cost of the phone might not be as expensive as the service plan for network data charges !

Has tethering really caught on.  If you have a phone tethered is the speed the same on the computer as it would be if it picked up it's own Internet.  Also I guess it is used where wifi is not.  So you are using the 3G networks?

have you ever thought about subscribing to a wifi pass ? you can buy one at any convenience store.  I myself use pccw and their coverage is not bad. Moreover it is surely the cheapest way to connect from a laptop (should be only circa 150 a month)

People want tethering because cell phone access is more prevalent than internet/wifi access.  The speed would only be as fast as what the cell phone provider can do (EDGE/3G/etc.)  In this case people aren't using tethering to replace their main internet connection, but to have easier access to the internet wherever they are.

interesting. i didn't know about this option.
since hotels are charging 200+ HKD a day for internet this would be a good deal.
The only catch is if i am able to receive the wifi signal in my hotel.

the wifi pass from PCCW is really decently priced. you're better off with the wide area of coverage they have than go through the trouble to buy a cell phone, tether and pay a plan

Some hotels have a business center that have free wifi if you are a guest there. Then they charge extra for internet in the room.

Are you trying to tether with a prepaid phone card? I tried to go online with my phone with a prepaid sim inserted in there. The phone couldn't even get online. Not sure if i would try it tethered. That would just be a nightmare to try and config.
