Check out this site.  http://www.redmondpie.com/iphone ... -spirit-successful/

You can jailbreak the phone yourself if you have a little computer knowledge or know someone who has computer knowledge.  If you take it somewhere to get it done "professionally", they will be using the same programs readily available on-line.  Due to AT&T locking the phone, you would have to first Jailbreak your iphone and then unlock it to use it in HK.  As for getting around the mini sim card, a lot of users here in the states just simply cut the excess area on their sim cards to make it fit.

Also, do not worry about jailbreaking the phone yourself.  If you ever brick the phone, you can always just restore it to factory settings.  The chances of you actually making the phone inoperable is slim unless you know how to get into the boot sector and mess with the boot sequence.  But if you do know how to get into the boot sector, you wouldn't be asking this question in the first place.

Let me know if you have any questions

Apple and AT&T changed the sim card on the iphone4 and now it requires a micro sim card....anybody know if any carriers in HK are using the micro sim cards?

You can make your own Micro sim from a normal sim card. Just search Google.
Some links are:

The nuances on what to do wit an iPhone are endless. Cutting a aim card to make it fit really takes thought.  Simple need to fit simple answer

Is this a standard that Apple & AT&T requires for iphone4 only with new microsim card?
This doesn't applies to all phones that at&t sells right?

New 'jailbreak' will unlock iPhone 4
LOUISA HEARN

The new iPhone 4.
Less than a week after its Australian launch, a 'jailbreak' has been released for the iPhone 4, opening up a blossoming market of non-Apple approved apps and free pirated versions of existing iTunes apps to its owners.

The release of Jailbreakme 2.0 follows a ruling in the US last week that declared it was no longer illegal to bypass manufacturer's protection mechanisms such as those imposed by Apple, and its developers say it will work on all iPhones and iPod touches running iOS4.

Apple's iPhone has built-in restrictions to stop users from running applications obtained from places other than iTunes App Store and while jailbreaking has been around since the very first iPhone, a degree of technical skill was once necessary to unlock the device.

The latest iPhone modifications, however, can now be easily accessed via the iPhone's own Safari web browser, and more than a million iPhone owners have already taken the plunge, driven by a desire to change wireless providers or source new non-approved applications, said the Electronic Frontier Foundation in the US.

A market for unofficial iPhone apps called Cydia has also sprung up with one of its most talked-about apps - Installous from Hackulous - offering free pirated versions of some of the 225,000-plus apps in the iTunes store.

However the Guardian reports that a number of readers have reported problems with the unofficial apps, while others warn the jailbreak modifications could make the phone more vulnerable to malware.

Apple issued a statement on the dangers of jailbreaking phones last week in response to the US ruling.

“Apple's goal has always been to ensure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.”

However it has also been widely reported on user forums that resetting the iPhone via iTunes can remove all traces of jailbreaking should a user need to call on their warranty.

While Apple's closed environment is often cited as a protective measure designed to benefit its customers, the open architecture embraced by Google has received a warm welcome, with reports this week from Nielsen's industry tracker that its Android smartphone OS accounted for 27 percent of the smartphones activated in the US in the first half of this year, compared with the iPhone's 23 percent.

"While the iPhone has been the headline grabber over the last few years in the smartphone market, Google's Android OS has shown the most significant expansion in market share among current subscribers," it said.

Jailbreak for 4G

IPhone 4G is now jailbreakable to the latest firmware

Will try tonight and get my mongering apps back on the phone. Note not all apps will work due to the new OS and will take some time before apps are compatible.

Does it make sense to jailbreak your old iPhone 3G so that you can be a sim abroad and just plug it in.  That way you can have phone and when in a wifi area the Internet.

I don't see why not.  Especially if your 3g is from the US and still locked to the AT&T network.  For all those that say you might brick your phone when you jailbreak, it can always be restored to it's original OS, unless you messed with the boot-up command.

In following up with another user's comments, are there pre-paid dataplans with minutes SIM cards available in HK and the China region? Or would I have to sign up for a year with a carrier?

In Hong Kong there is no lock on the phones for networks, so if you are purchasing it in HK you are fine.

The jailbreak software allows you to use redsn0w or ultrasn0w or whatever else program to unlock your phone.  If you don't jailbreak, you won't be able to use the unlock programs

I think only in the US is the iphone locked to a specific carrier.  And that will end this year.

Actually .. as long as you have it Jailbroken and unlocked, you can just cut a SIM down to a microSIM card and use it in the iPhone on the T-mobile service.

The big thing that is supposedly coming up is that Verizon (which uses CDMA) will be getting the iPhone 4G.

Although there have been no official announcements of this, reports and images have leaked on the internet of the beta CDMA or CDMA/GSM hybrid of the iPhone 4G.

  I think only in t ...

There are also custom iPhone firmwares (ipsw) out there that allow you to just drop in the firmware and have it jailbroken AND unlocked.

HOWEVER, please get your .SHSH files immediately before Apple stop signing the current firmwares. Once it is stopped, there is no way to restore/install in any other version of the firmwares besides the ones Apple is signing. And they usually will only sign the latest one.

Even if you are not thinking of jailbreaking your iPhone, get the .SHSH anyway. It will serve to allow you to use any firmware you have the .SHSH. This way you are not "forced" to upgrade to the latest versions whenever Apple tell you so.

Google a program call TinyUmbrella for this.

All the apps are compatible (since the OS is backwards compatible) .. however, the applications will not be able to take advantage of the new features that iOS4.x has .. such as running in the background so that if you switch of the app and switch back in, it would return you to (almost) exactly when you swapped out of the app. Instead it would be as tho you quit the app and restarted it again.
