I got to be good friends with some Filipino musicians in Taiwan. Same thing. They were essentially slaves. The boss took most of their money to pay their "debt". 3 people sharing a 2 room hotel for 2 years. They were forced to purchase expensive equipment and pay for it out of their own pay. 2 times per year they had to leave to keep visa status, so the boss just sent them to Hong Kong. They just sit at the airport 1 day and then go back. Too cheap to even pay for a hotel. This sort of thing absolutely does happen. Of course it's happening in the sex industry. Think about that, next time you're paying to get your rocks off.

My sample size of HK bargirls is extensive. Yes, I HAVE met a couple who were indeed "trafficked" by a nasty agent who had them in debt (for the flight/visa) and kept their passport until paid with hefty extra charges. Evil bastards.

But this was two or three girls out of hundreds and hundreds. The vast majority learn of the Wanchai scene through a cousin/sister/friend and joined voluntarily to earn far more than they can at home.

The percent of wanchai gals that are trafficked is very small.

Interesting that, as in the Swiss report linked below as well, often the pimp is a woman (former WG herself?).

What really raised my eyebrows was the estimate that half a million women in HK are involved in the sex trade. That's what, one in four women between 18 and 45?!

Does it exist? Yes. Is it common in the WC bar scene? No.

As stated above by Wander I have a rather large sample size of these types of girls and Have seen zero evidence that they are anything other than active participants of their own choice.

If these pimps are running girls, they are the worst pimps in the world. The girls I typically have seen are only available one day per week (Sunday), have a small number of hours they can meet, 6am-8pm, and have very little off time. Doesn't sound like a pimp that knows how to effectively maximize their resources.

If this was a true trafficking operation the girls would be there every day and every night ready to meet their next customer.

I can't speak to the curtain bars or how they operate, but it seems they may be at a higher risk of such incidents.
