...

The 18-135 came as part of the camera kit, 18-135 Aperture 1:3.5 - 5.6
It is a good all round lens, good for general photography. I have been pretty happy with it. It is quite large however.

oh gawd.  a 7D. drool.

ive always contemplated getting the  7D, the photos from it are absolutely gorgeous. the only issue i have with it is the weight and size, add a large zoom lens and the entire thing is pretty large man

600d is just out

fyi, 7d and 5d colors vary a lot, even if you use the same picture style format. 7d just cant replicate previous models canon color. give me a weird tinge. 5d color is simply too good, its replacement is coming out though.

60d is too similar as 7d and if u like the rotating screen. it will be great to consider as u can snap pics with your gf

You can hire lenses out at £100 a shot plus they need to pre-authorise your credit card with the amount which the lense is worth....

and what kind of SD card do you use?

I recommanded the sandisk 8go 30mo/s or the new one at 45mo/s especially if you take photo in raw

that why the 5D with CF card is a pro cam not the 550D.

only the cam using CF can be consider as pro due to their high speed 60m/s and now 100m/s
in raw (more than 20mo for a photo) those rate make a huge difference, especially when you use the continuous shooting mode...

RICO has two of these...

Few points to consider.  If you buy in HK and return to the UK and find a fault, can be more of a problem to get it fixed etc.

Although in HK sometimes you need to argue a bit when returning new goods as more often than not they give you the address of the 'service centre' and you have to trek off to some industrial estate in the middle of nowhere.  Be persistent, keep your cool and if necessary ask to speak to the manager and usually they will relent (and of course whilst you are there discussing a return, they can't sell and will probably put off other customers).

I have found places like Broadway and Fortress will discount if you play hardball - like saying - if you give me this price, I will buyright now and then turn to leave if they don't.  Maybe more so on more expensive items.  I have been offered big reductions on things like flat screen TV's on this basis.

At least with Broadway etc you most likely (99% sure, if not 100%) get sold a complete fake.  Some of the nicest stores in Tsim Sha Tsui with all the bright neon and helpful staff are the ones to really avoid.

They have MANY scams.  Selling fakes, giving a huge discount on a price that was completely ridiculous - even to boxing up your product and switching it to a lesser model, fake etc before they hand it to you.

Avoid like the plague - they prey on tourists. ...

Are you sure about that...

Did you have a bad experience there....

I asked basically the same type of question about getting a camera in HK.  I compared prices and places and ending up getting it in the USA by mail order in December.  I almost got the Panasonic GF2. After finding out the price, I decided not to get it.

Check out my question in this thread called, "Help with buying cameras in Hong Kong".

the transcend 10 has a writing speed of 20mo/s, maybe a bit slow in raw and raw+jpeg but quite enough if you are using jpeg only.

SD card is so cheap in hk!!!

Earlier I did not realize that you already had a good range of lenses. In that case I'll agree with the previous poster that the Canon 70-200 would be excellent. Nothing but praise for that one.

As you were also looking for macro lens, this is the one I've been wanting to buy but don't have yet:

RICO's not too sure what the " SPYDER CALIBRATOR" is kaka...

I know Syder do a photography software then again they do jackets as well....

the Spyder Calibrator is a device that sticks to you monitor so you can calibrate the colors. Most monitors do not accurately reflect colors and when you print they will look different. I use the Huey Pro from Pantone (similar device) and use it to calibrate by desktop and laptop. I've been happy with it.

Skinny, I believe you mentioned that you had a 16-35mm lens (some time ago), what brand and aperture is this? How do you find it in the hotel rooms, too much of a wide angle.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM L II

Yes too much wide angle at the wide end. I quickly noticed that the wide end is not so good to portray girls, as it stretches so much outside the center. And as the viewers do not necessarily realize that, they were making comments of weird long/thin legs etc. So since then I've only used the 35mm when I do use it, and that gets close and good enough.

The first attachment an example of 16mm and how it distorts the body at edges of photo.

Second a 35mm close-up.

I see what you mean strong distortion in the first shot, big head, big feet. I like the second one, particularly the short depth of field.
Skinny, you saving up for the canon 17-55 2.8. It will be the next purchase for me. (i might have to balance less wg and save more)

in reply to Rico or for anyones reference, the shop in SSP is this:

http://www.prosourcecamera.com/p6.html

My last purchase was over 2yrs ago a Canon 40D with EFS17-85mm, EFS70-300mm and a 50mm F1.8 which is quite adequate for me.Still a good camera so just upgrading lenses will do for me...for now.

Pretty much frequent this shop helping friends in China to buy,get good discount as well as numerous freebies like filters/extra battery/bags etc.

Maybe I will ask the shop which lens is good for taking pictures of girls in hotel rooms and see what happens.

both have pro and cons.

i like vignetting.
i seldom use flash, yet i like to take photos in low light.
in terms of light-sensitivity, no APS-C sensor can ever beat a full frame.
FF sensor is 156% bigger than an APS-C.
so the difference is 1.36 stop.
that's a big deal of difference!
for some lens, the price difference for 1.36 stop is already close to HK$10k.
at high ISO, the difference is even more obviously.
much less noise on a FF.

Canon lens, more choices for FF.
although i must admit, more and more are coming out for APS-C.
but talk abt L-optics (Canon's Pro series lens)  there's not a single one available for APS-C. (correct me if i'm wrong)
APS-C lens for Canon uses EF-S mounting, which means they can't be used on FF cameras.
i love the 10-22mm lens, but can't fit on my FF cameras.

as for people who chases megapixels on cameras.
unless you are printing for the billboard, why do you need so much megapixels?
generally more pixels = more noise & lower sensitivity.

anyone who uses SLR and changes lens often enough will know that dust will get into the sensor.
and dust on a FF looks 1.6 times smaller than APS-C.
and for me, it's easier to clean a FF sensor. (more space)

many people argue APS-C is more for casual photographers who don't want to spend too much $$$.
i thought so that way too.
so my first DSLR was a 350D.
but as i gradually demand more from my photos, the small sensor and limited lens doesn't work for me anymore.
so i switched to 2nd-hand FF cameras.
affordable and so much difference in photo quality.

now my old APS-C camera and lens are in the storeroom.
only used when i want to travel light.

Besides the huge names, there are some specialty stores like
http://cam2.com.hk/
and
DC Career (don't know website even after a search)

These stores generally have guys who are much more technically knowledgeable and both have locations in MK.  The latter is in the computer centre tho, not on the street.  Prices may be better at these, especially if you are OK with "water goods" which are equivalent models imported from Japan or elsewhere.  These stillhave the warranties (make sure it's an international warranty) and are new, but are slightly cheaper for some reason.

i dont see why that simple post from wikipedia is useless. it sums up very nicely what prime lenses and what they are capable of in a nutshell without bombarding you with unnecessary information.

It's not the question i asked...I have already read the specs and reviews....

QUOTE:
If you want t a personal opinion on it, basically prime lenses makes stuff 'pop out' in a picture due to their depth of field and superior lens quality, so taking photos of faces, people etc will be very fun as the aperture is also very wide. not good for scenery shooting and cant zoom. ...

That's the personnal opinion RICO wanted to hear....

When you refer to the phrase " Makes stuff pop out...."...

RICO knows exactly what you are talking about bro....
