1. Olympus E-P2   Just came out in feb 2011 only 720 video 30 frames sec
2. Sigma's DP1 large-sensor  20.7 x 13.8 mm (2.85 cm²)  fixed lens at 20mm

Have you consider the Panasonic GF2 ?  It's small and compact with a good size senor. Has 1080i video at 60 frames a sec.  If I had the money, I think I would have gotten the GF2. Selling on Amazon with a 14mm f/2.5 for 699 USD. For me I like a wide and a zoom in one lens like 14 to 42mm but it's only 3.5

Calaisien: nice Bayan bar photo. Amazing what you can do with a basic dslr.

Rico: avoid the filters if you can. no point to put a cheaper piece of glass over more expensive one. gl with purchases.

Rico          1-3-2011 11:26          Acceptance          +1          Any more tips on using flash

I was actually very surprised how easy the external flash was to use out of the box. Just attach it on and snap away, no setting necessary required as it's so smart with the automatic measurements and what not.

Two tips learned from reading that are applicable to taking photos of girls inside rooms:
- Set on Rear sync in your flash. In Canon models it's off by default. That way your flash fires at end of exposure instead of beginning, which will allow for the background get some colorful exposure instead of being black.
- Drag the shutter. Set shutter speed to slower, so more of background is exposed. Flash firing at end will freeze the person well enough. I've been trying now with 1/60 and that's been ok already. The book was suggesting less.

I'll give some of that a go next time Skinny.
I found the flash also easy to use out of the box. Generally just aim it up towards the ceiling with a diffuser on it.

the 550D is not a basic dslr, he got the same sensor and chip then the 7D so not a bad cam. And the lens do a lot, you can no way got the same effect with the standard 18-55 lens

You seem to know your stuff when it comes to smaller lightweight cameras bro Weelock...

I have had a go with the GF2..I was quite impressed but was not impressed enough to buy one....( Why do they call the GF..Girlfriend in HK)

Any other suggestions bro...

RICO does most of his shooting during the morning and afternoon at F6.7 to F9.5..

At night time then F2.8 to F4 will do just fine...

But i do agree with you that a wide angle lense would come in very handy.....Saves me walking backwards ten paces to get the shot...

I agree about the awesome photos by bro Calaisien but not about your assessment about the Canon 550D..

What camera do you have in your arsenal bro...

I wouldn't call the Hoya id protection filters cheap bro....( Around 40 to 50 pounds here in the UK)

I would rather scratch the filter than my original lense....

@ Bro SkinnyForum and bro mikeo90....

It seems that you guys are really into flash photography.....

How's about unloading some photos with and without flash......( Really am intrigued to see if it would really make that much of a difference...)

I had to use the built in flash in my 550D when i took the real pics of Siu Yu...

The lighting was really bad....It was dark and red....

I am quite impressed on how the Canon 550D is able to cope with the poor red light condition in the rooms which walkups use....

Couple of examples......

flash is very useful to shot people at night and even day time. Sometime when it's very sunny you look a bit dark, the flash can compensate that

but myself prefer to avoid flash if I can

Hey Rico...
i ended up buying both the 14mm 2.8 and the 24mm 1.4. I must admit, these lenses rock... I heard that the zoom lenses dont give the same clarity and sharpness as the primes, so i ended up spending alittle more on the primes.
I would highly recommend the 14mm.. it gives a 114 degree view.. really fun to play with.

decide which brand you want to use first. It really impacts on what lens, accessories you buy in the future because you are basically stuck with that particular brand because when you are 1-2 years into the hobby and got some lenses. The cost to change brand will get really costy.

I think you have to get special cases for the lenses in HK too because its quite humid and could cause fungus on the lenses (bros could correct me on this as I am not 100% sure)

My 50mm canon prime lens just karked it (technical term for is stuffed). The focus lens moves but the focus does not. It stuffed a recent photo session.
It is still under warranty however.
