Hahaha, I'm in the same boat as you hunter.

When I first got to China, bought a 700 RMB nokia (it even came with a free hat!). I would have still been using it but my battery shot out, and it was such an old model that a replacement battery cost almost the same as the phone! Finally got a smartphone about 2 yrs ago (HTC Magic), although I hardly use any of its functions.

Rumour has it you can get the same contract as 3HK cheaper through China Unicom HK (they have stores in Hong Kong).

Warning: some people say the network quality of 3HK is not as good as the big (expensive) providers, but in terms of pricing and flexibility travelling to China their deal is a very good one.
But 3HK does have a great data-only plan, with no contract, just month-to-month payment ... quality of the network is fine for data, probably OK for voice too for most people, unless you're very sensitive to occasional dropped connections while on the move or travel to remote locations in NT.

Check it out.

BTW These days I don't get a phone included in the phone contract, unless my employer is paying.
If I'm paying, it's cheaper to buy the phone separately (find the best deal), buy the phone contract (again, best deal, for shortest lock-in time).

I picked up an underground "iPhone 5" while in SZ for $380RMB 2 weeks ago.  Supposedly 90% of the design.  Battery conked out on me.

with jobs stepping down it seems that the product must be ready for release.  he stayed on long enough to finish, seems plausibe that it would come out soon.

Well, the WSJ has pretty much confirmed (and I doubt that they'd write about something that they didn't have a solid source on) that the iPhone 5 (errr, or SOME type of iPhone, but most likely the new version) will be out in the end of Sept/beginning of Oct. Link below:

iPhone 5 prototype LOST

It seems like someone lost a pre released Iphone 5 just like a Iphone 4 was lost last year. does anyone what to buy one ?  I get in line now.

==========================================================

In a bizarre repeat of a high-profile incident last year, an Apple employee once again appears to have lost an unreleasediPhone in a bar, CNET has learned.

The errant iPhone, which went missing in San Francisco's Mission district in late July, sparked a scramble by Apple security to recover the device over the next few days, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

Last year, an iPhone 4 prototype was bought by a gadget blog that paid $5,000 in cash. This year's lost phone seems to have taken a more mundane path: it was taken from a Mexican restaurant and bar and may have been sold on Craigslist for $200. Still unclear are details about the device, what version of the iOS operating system it was running, and what it looks like.

While Apple has not publicly announced any plans for future phones, unconfirmed reports in the last few weeks suggest the launch date for theiPhone 5 is likely to be in early October. Other reports from Taiwan have set the date at September or October. (See CNET's iPhone 5 rumor roundup.)

Apple declined to comment after being contacted this morning. A spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department said the company did not file a police report based on the loss at the bar. Craigslist did not respond to requests for comment.

A day or two after the phone was lost at San Francisco's Cava 22, which describes itself as a "tequila lounge" that also serves lime-marinated shrimp ceviche, Apple representatives contacted San Francisco police, saying the device was priceless and the company was desperate to secure its safe return, the source said.

Apple electronically traced the phone to a two-floor, single-family home in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood, according to the source.

When San Francisco police and Apple's investigators visited the house, they spoke with a man in his twenties who acknowledged being at Cava 22 on the night the device went missing. But he denied knowing anything about the phone. The man gave police permission to search the house, and they found nothing, the source said. Before leaving the house, the Apple employees offered the man money for the phone no questions asked, the source said, adding that the man continued to deny he had knowledge of the phone.

In an interview this afternoon, Jose Valle told CNET that neither the police nor Apple security ever contacted him. Valle, who owns the bar with his family, said however does he remember a man calling multiple times about a lost iPhone about a month ago. He told the man he would call him back if he ever found the phone.

"I guess I have to make my drinks a little less strong," Valle said.

After last year's embarrassing loss, Apple reportedly has taken extraordinary steps to protect its prototype devices from leaks. Next-generation iPhones are sent to carriers for testing "inside locked and sealed boxes so that the carriers can carry out checks on their network compatibility in their labs," according to the Guardian.

Apple developers have been given new iPhones with an upgraded processor -- the one that is used in theiPad 2 and is expected to appear in the next-generation iPhone. But the device "is virtually identical to the iPhone 4, and there is no way anyone can tell it's not an iPhone 4 based on the phone's exterior," a report at 9to5Mac.com says. Even last year's prototype was enclosed in a case designed to make it look like an iPhone 3GS.

Last year's prototype iPhone went missing when Robert Gray Powell, an Apple computer engineer who was 28 years old at the time, left it in a German beer garden in Redwood City, Calif.

In early August, San Mateo County prosecutors filed misdemeanor criminal charges against two men, Brian Hogan and Sage Wallower, for allegedly selling Powell's iPhone 4 prototype to Gawker Media's Gizmodo blog. An arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow.

Prosecutors obtained a warrant to search the home of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen, and indicated they might prosecute Gizmodo, but eventually decided not to file charges.

Under a California law dating back to 1872, any person who finds lost property and knows who the owner is likely to be--but "appropriates such property to his own use"--is guilty of theft. In addition, a second state law says any person who knowingly receives property that has been obtained illegally can be imprisoned for up to one year

I'll be getting an iPhone 5 from AT&T whenever it comes out, but does anyone knows usually how long it will take for a program to unlock it comes out? I'll be traveling back and forth from the states and HK a lot so I need a phone that is unlocked.

Hunter, I am owner and user of an iPhone 4. Interestingly, I got the phone from HK, even though I'd never visited the place, then. I agonised over months on what to get, once I'd decided to upgrade from the standard phones that I was using until then. You got it bang on target that iPhone games are easy to handle. Why do you think that is? Because of four things that Apple has made possible and shown the rest of the world, how to innovate.

[A] It scoured and bought innovative firms that were working on cutting edge hardware. Then it used the know-how smartly by tying up with Korean and Chinese suppliers (incidentally, Samsung is also one of the largest hardware supplier to Apple - interesting, eh?). This not only helped keep costs down, but also given the volume they pre-ordered, Apple could make each supplier enter into an iron clad contract that prevented them or anyone else, using the technology for at least 3-5 years. This ensured, Apple always had the cutting edge. Key example: the retina display. I have compared BB, Samsung Galaxy, and many others in terms of resolution. Nothing comes even close to the iPhone. Simple.

[B] Apple secured some of the best OS developers and created a complete ecosystem that they once again kept a tight hold on. Developers are given access only to the portions necessary for their apps to integrate with the system. But nobody ever gets full access to the OS. This has meant that their OS has been insulated largely from the virus creators, for example. It also meant that the technology hardly fell into the wrong hands, ever.

[C] Design. Here, Apple wrote the book on how design makes you want...nay...love a product way more. Now combine it with functionality (as a result of A & B) and you have a winner! The iPhone is something that people love to exhibit, as well as use! And it is not a requirement to be a rocket scientist to use an iPhone, as the interface is so easy and intuitive to learn. So, I doubt that you will have any difficulty in understanding how the iPhone can be used. How it works, is another matter. Steve Jobs, simply say, "It just works". And some of smartest brains on this planet have tried to unravel how it works, nobody has succeeded so far. And every time, anybody came close, Apple just upped the bar in one more leap. Talk about competitive barrier.

[D] Marketing. Apple from a has been back in the 80s to one of the most envied companies in the world today, has been the result of some path breaking and equally simplistic but focussed marketing. They have created the perception among the people, media, competitors, whoever you add in this list... they simply deliver the best. They have backed this up with points A, B and C. They have not tried to hit the world at the same time. They have steadily taken over. In HK, practically almost everyone is an iPhone user. Yet, it is only this year that they are opening their own Apple Store.

Coming to porkychopping photos or for that matter, watching the latest porn movie or playing in a 3D game, you can do all of that and more on the iPhone. The new iPhone is not likely to be much more different from the current iPhone. It may have slightly sharper edges, the round home button may become a square home button, the screen size may increase slightly. There may be some interesting wireless charging built in, and why not? Almost everything is wireless on the phone, except charging and syncing and the technology exists today to enable these two wired features also to be done away. What's going to be the kill factor will however be iOS 5. October and November are likely to see the roll out of the iPhone 5 across the globe, so you may not have to wait for too long.

Hope this helps you get a clue

jjz242, if you travel so much between HK and US, I'd advise you to pick up the phone not from AT&T but from HK. Usually HK gets the iPhone for sale about a few weeks after it hits the US market. Reason? The HK iPhone comes factory unlocked, i.e. you are not contracted to Smartone Vodafone or any such Tel provider in HK, unlike in the States where every bloody iPhone is locked for 2 years to an AT&T, Sprint, Vodafone, whatever.

As far as jailbreak is concerned, you may need to wait a few months. The chaps who created green poison, etc. that jailbroke iOS 4.2.1 were at the Apple developer conference when the iOS 5 initial beta release was showcased. But they will need time to work out the kinks before the jailbreak can work...

Cheers!
A

Thanks for the info! I think I'll pick one up from Hong Kong since I'll be here until late January. I'm just hoping it won't be sold out or doubled in retail price when its available in HK.

Looks like Apple is going to announce on Oct 5 to roll out Iphone 5. The announcement will be done by the new CEO Cook.  Apple usually will have the phones on sale couple weeks after the announcement. Don't know when they will be on sale in Hong Kong and the rest of the world.
