Chinese toddler left bloody in hit-and-run dies

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys9DPhAMJr0&feature=share

A toddler who was twice run over by vans and then ignored by passers-by on a busy market street died Friday a week after the accident and after days of bitter soul-searching over declining morality in China...

how can someone be so cruel.  This really bothered me

"It isn’t ignoring, it’s not daring. If one were to encounter a Nanjing judge, one would be screwed.

[Note: "Nanjing judge" refers to the infamous 2006 case of a man named Peng Yu who helped a woman to the hospital after she had fallen only to have the old woman accuse him of knocking her down. The Nanjing judge in that case ultimately ruled that common sense dictated that only the person who hit her would take her to the hospital, setting a precedent that continues only further discourages and reinforces many Chinese people's wariness to help others in similar situations.]"

A chinese netizen's response to the whole situation. Explains quite a lot actually.

They caught the 1st driver and the 2nd driver turned himself in 3 days later!

Totally shocking & I think the public are being to harsh on the parents.

personally i agree with bd on this - it's totally the governments doing that would make otherwise civil people mind there own damn business.  the punishments are really strict for those that hit pedestrians - even if they're technically in the right (the girl wandered into the street, etc) they'd most likely face a pretty stiff punishment. i think most people in that situation would do the most obvious thing here and get the fuck out of the area.

as for the passerbys based on bd's story i totally believe that it's not the case that people don't give a shit - it's they've been conditioned to fear any disturbance that doesn't directly involve them or there loved ones. it's fucked up. the system needs a fixing or two...

But this doesn't justify the passer-bys to ignore the kid. What's worse is the driver of the van.

These incidents of moral standards don't just happen in China, in the western world we have our own moral issues in society.  In the USA a 78 year old pedestrian was struck by a car and fell to ground in pain all the while other drivers ignored her.  In Canada a 16 year old girl was gang raped in full view of other kids at a high school party.  I am having issues thinking our world is becoming one where helping the helpless and marginalized is becoming a rare event.

The first driver I believe he stated if the child died it'd cost him much less (due to medical fees) because all he would need to do is pay off the parents... I don't know how a government lets people think they can get away with that...
