Some sites were permanently shut down and people went to jail for making money off the activities of WGs.
Some, like 141, regrouped and reorganised to work within the law. But there are still risks.

But don't worry about things that have nothing to do with you. You can visit WGs and you're not breaking
any laws, so you got nothing to worry about. One rule - never argue with the cops. They wanna see you ID,
show it to them. They ask what you're doing, tell the truth. But after years of mongering in HK, I've never
spoken to a cop but I am white, which is a huge advantage.

But why is a newspaper allowed to make money off WGs when they post a classified ad while a website is not? Or is there something I am missing?

These things do concern me because I was under the impression that HK had a sound legal system and that there aren't any "irregularities" where police abuse a law where it's not supposed to be used. Though the judiciary here has a reputation of being sound, so I can't imagine them convicting something of something that is supposed to be legal...even if it's "barely legal".

Also I went to the Ziteng website and they claim that the cops after the handover are extremely abusive to WGs. Is this really true or are they exaggerating and not much has changed? Because outside of the sex industry, it doesn't seem like law enforcement has changed much. Plus it doesn't sound like they are hitting the sex industry that much harder than before the handover because it's still so prevalent and overall the vice laws here are much looser than for example in the USA.

Also I think if a website wants to make money off WG activity, they should be smart and form an offshore corporation and host their site offshore too. It's such an easy thing to do these days and it would have saved the owners jail time.

Yeah, what you're missing bro is that newspapers are owned by rich, powerful, well connected people.

That's why 141 is still operating.

if I ever get caught in a raid, would it better to show my HK ID or my UK Passport?
Is it better to speak to them as a local or feign lack on Cantonese and be 100% English speaking?

Is their requesting to see ID purely part of procedure as per stop checks or is it actually followed up on?

I would still leave the passport in the safe, you need it for travel. Just carry some other I.D.

Here is some pretty legitimate information about public police stop and search search powers.

I have been reading this post, but still have a couple of questions:

1. Is it sufficient with an ID like a bank card or drivers licence, or do you have to bring your passport at all times?
2. Is it illegal to bring 2 gals to your hotel room, or is it only illegal for WG?
3. What if there are two bros also? Is 2+2 illegal?
4. What are the consequences of being caught engaging in illegal activities (in general and worst case)?

I have been asked for id at a dance club before even. Cops came in and just stopped the music and checked everyone. Maybe they were looking for illegal immigrants.

I've been told its better to use a foreign passport than a HK ID.  Policemen prefer to mess less with tourist than people with HK ID.  I am not sure its true but it is plausible imo

that's what I have been told as well.  Not dissing the Hk Police but the standard of English spoken by some is not the best ... if you speak fluenty in english and pretend not to understand Cantonese ... even if you are chinese ... helps ...

They give you less hassles ... great for us ABC's CBC'c and BBC's

You're right on the fact that the Police don't like to mess with Tourist; most of them ask me for my ID in Chinese and I stare blankly at them (even though I understand) and they ask in English. I provide them with my British Passport and they return it and say "bye". Not much hassle from them even when I ran across a busy intersection once and was stopped by them. Note that within a one month stay in Hong Kong, I was asked for ID approximately 12 times and followed by Police a few times for looking a bit sketchy.

However I've been given trouble once in MK by Police because I was walking up to a hotel resv. They showed their credentials and asked for my ID and I gave them it; the copied some information down and searched my bag. Yes i know I have to right to refusal, but I had nothing to hide in my bag except my wallet and my Canadian passport.

that is very true. i have no experience with the police in this area, but i did get into a few pub troubles or drug raids (no i don't do drugs) in Malaysia and China. I replied them in english when i'm alone or swedish if i'm with friends and show them my swedish ID, they usually just ask me to go while the rest have to stay for some paper work.

So to that logic if an apartment is a 'vice establishment' when there is more than 1 girl in the room for sex, what about if you have a 3some? Could it be construed that the 3some is a 'single' sex act?
