Sometimes, they are real and these WGs actually just have a few whales that are more than willing to give them extra tips and expensive gifts. Personally, I look at their profile to see if they mention anything that's worth buying. Examples are sweets, drinks, or cheaper souvenirs (i.e. if you see them posting about loving anime or Pokemon, buy something for them in that regard). Otherwise, I go into the session without any gifts at all, since they'll probably regift what you've given them or toss it away anyways.

Individually packaged shelf stable food is safe and convenient, small souvenirs are nice too. I usually pick some up in advance, whenever I travel to somewhere interesting.
