Sugarbook founder Darren Chan is set to go on trial for publishing a ranking on Malaysian universities with the most sugar babies.
After seven days in remand, Chan, 34, pleaded not guilty to publishing content with the intention to cause fear or unrest under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code. He is out on RM10,000 (US$2,500) bail and was ordered to surrender his passport.
The post Top 10 Sugar Baby Universities in Malaysia was written based on data gathered from the Sugarbook platform and was published WHEN and later picked up by other outlets. The platform has been banned in Malaysia and the post no longer available. Chan was charged with publishing the ranking to technave.com.
Sunway University, which topped the list, condemned the findings as “immoral.”
Chan faces up to two years’ jail and a fine.
Prosecutors originally proposed a bail of RM100,000 (US$25,000) based on grounds that the offense was of public interest but Chan’s lawyer Shashi Devan rebutted with a lower amount.
The case is fixed for mention on March 26.
Sugarbook.com has been banned in Malaysia but the platform is still accessible via Sucrebook.com.
