Jakarta transportation

Looking for advice on gojek in jakarta.  Ive never been and im trying to figure out where to stay.

Im planning on hitting a lot of the north jakarta places (1001, illegals, etc) and would prefer to stay in a 5 star place like the grand hyatt.  Apparently, traffic is murder so taxis may take forever.  Is gojek relatively safe?  I take mototaxis in bangkok and find them ok, so if its the same as that, im good.  if the drivers are insane, maybe i will stay up north in a less nice place.  Im sure every driver is different, but would just like to hear opinions from personal experience.  Please pass any advice you may have.  Thanks.

Just came from Jakarta and the traffic is indeed terrible.  They are building a subway system around downtown so a lot of roads are blocked off or reduced in lanes.  I've taken a couple of gojeks and they're ok for the most part.  According to my Indonesian friends, the dangerous part is that there are a ton of potholes in the streets, so if the drivers are going fast and hit it really hard, you basically bounce off the bike.  In my own experience you're not able to go that fast anyway since even on a bike there is limited space to wiggle between cars.

I usually go with the GRAB taxi's - with pre determined cost of travel and air conditioned car I reckon it is much safer and comfortable than the gojek.
If you have to go with gojek, I suggest you bring a shower cap wiht you when using their helmet.  You never know what fleas or fungal infection the last user have on their head.

I think GRAB bikes may have started recently in Jakarka which has the ease of booking and predetermined cost/destination info for the driver allowing you to get through traffic easier.

Used them a lot in Vietnam as opposed to the freelancer bikes on past couple of trips and worked well - cheaper and less riding in circles trying to find the destination

Agree on the point on shower cap as a few of my friends have ended up with head lice

i was in jakarta for 3 weeks for work late last year
stayed in central jakarta and used gojek predominantly since they had the most drivers.  never had an issue, apart from the usual cancellations and lack of language.
actually it helps if you have a local sim card with data because you can top with go cash and there's rebates so you even get more discount.

during rush hour forget about going up north.  you'll be stuck in traffic.

night time, around 10pm onwards, never had an issue apart from the occasional traffic but usually i'd zip right along without an issue.

Thanks for the reply.   Just to be clear, during rush hour, even gojek is no good?  I was figuring on them being able to weave between the cars.

Gojek bikes are fine if you're alright with the lack of safety.

I thought gojeks were the bikes and grab was the taxis.  Didnt know gojek had cars too.

Ok thanks for the info.  im willing to use the bikes during rush hour because probably they are weaving between cars and not going too fast.  Outside of rush hour, probably take taxis.  No sense in risking it.
