Hong Kong Bank

I want to have a bank account in Hong Kong.

1.  What is needed to open a bank account for a US citizen?
2.  Are the banks in Hong Kong insured like US banks?  In US, the banks that are FDIC insured are insured $100,000 USD.

HSBC should be fine. If they go then the world has probably gone as well.

1. You can only one with a passport and proof of address (overseas address will also do as long as it matches the one on your passport).
2. Yes, but it's only $100K in HKD.

if you want to open an account with HSBC you will also need someone to recommend you.  they don't just open them.  But otherwise, with a passport and some money you can open.  Then you can also use online banking
Only problem for US citizens, maybe they have tightened up since the UBS scandal

NOT true ...no need for any recommendations.

I just walked in to HSBC with my passport and my contract of employment and walked out 25 mins later with a cheque book, bank card and all done with a smile !

VERY easy ...

Cheers

I remember those "RECOMMENDATIONS" back then...

I found it so damn weird, it's like the craziest thing in the world if you are from the US.
