I hate Kwun Tong, since the nests are all scattered around, but there are a few gems to be found. Since I was feeling adventurous today, I was roaming around a few buildings. In building #1, I ran into a groups of 5-6 people on 3/F, they were 20-30 years old. What stood out was there were 2 women within that group. Before my brain registered, one of the guy asked if I'm a resident of the building. Took me half a sec to realize they were the po-po. I know I'm not doing anything illegal, so told them I'm not a resident. Then the same guy told me they're there to do ID checks, and that I should come back in 5min to do what I need to do. I walked out of building #1 to get some water from 7/11, downed it, and went to building #2. As soon as I turned the corner on the stairway between 2/F and 3/F, I ran into the same group of LE again. They recognised me immediately and jokingly said I'm too fast, they then recommend me I should go to a nearby cafe now and come back in 20min.

Overall, a pretty cordial exchange, there was no yelling or barking commends, just a pretty civilized encounter. For those who are afraid of running into LE, as long as you don't go fill retard, you will be fine, there is nothing to be afraid of when you run into LE during your walk-up.

I guess they just want o have a clean sheet (no pun intended!) and avoid paperwork to report. Either that, or they themselves partake in said activities and want first dibs!!! Hahaha

what are you on about?  there's no offense being committed, so there isn't anything they should or even could be doing.  

Of course they know what the building is, and whose ID cards they're checking.  But that's a different law altogether.

Too late to edit, but I want to add, if you need to smoke weed before doing the deed, it's best not to do it at the stairway, because you never know when you'll run into LE. Why am I putting this up? Because in the stairway of one of the buildings I roamed yesterday, I came across the telltale stench of Mary-Jane.

Ran into a popo raid at an MK massage parlour a while back. Sadly, my experience with them wasn't as pleasant. I wasn't doing anything wrong, and I knew nothing was going to happen to me, but they were rather terse and slightly power hungry / rude.

They are possibly power hungry/rude until they know you're a only a punter and not a papasan. The difference between the two posters is that one was wandering the hallway in a 141 and the other was in a massage joint and could possibly have been a papasan.

We were all instructed to go to the lounge area, and one of them barked some instructions. I'd fallen asleep during the massage and was foggy and hadn't heard clearly. While my chinese is passable, instinctively i default to english and asked a female officer for clarification. Their squad leader i guess.....(?)... storms over from the back of the room and rather loudly inquired what dialogue had transpired. I opened my mouth to repeat my query, and he loudly asked if i was stupid or dumb. The female officer herded him away and another officer came to explain the situation to me.

then this was not an regular inspection by the police licencing division ... its more like a police raid ... and someone in that area must have been up to something and the police were cracking down

in these 'raids' the cops are not polite to clients of the establishment - this is designed to scare clients away so it effects the establishment's business.

Likewise I was at a sauna in ymt (won't name it) when popo raided. Fairly rude and barked orders to tell the customers to sit down and shut up. Checked id of everyone and took away a gal.

At that point I rather wished I had my eyes closed as all the bright lights were on and I saw all the gals crystal clear. Killed the mood and LB was very scared from seeing the gals. Haven't been back to the place since.

Would the police give you an easier time if you show your HKID or your foreign passport (who those of us with one)?

Great observation. I'd almost forgotten. After the popo left, and i went back into the room, the SP said that the cops were looking for someone. Something had happened in the area like a day or so earlier.

Back in the day I used to party a lot all over HK and I quite often I found myself present in many raids.

If it was a police raid in LKF, the police were quite polite and cordial and more often than not, did not check everyone's ID. Usually among the cops present will be at least one or two gweilos. Often the reason for raid, it seemed was to check the alcohol license holder's details and whether or not the club was adhering to the license restrictions...which meant I was most likely see these type of raids in the new establishments. Once a club/bar has been opened at least 6 months in LKF, there were hardly any more raids.

(HK police will often check the alcohol license of bars and restaurants because it is the local police precinct decides whether or not a place deserves a license after they have interviewed the future license holder.)

If it was a raid in Wanchai, the police attitude once again depended on the location. If it was a hotel club/bar, the police were there for same reasons as in LKF and were polite and cordial. If they were in some of smaller above-ground floor bars, the police were usually not there to check alcohol licenses but to look for someone specific or to check for drug dealing. I remember once I was a bystander to a confrontation between the police and triad. The police were shouting at a table of dodgy types to give them the person they were looking for...and the shouting went back and forth until the person desired was handed to police.

If it was in TST, the police will act just like what UncleDad experienced at the raid at a massage place even when they raid the bars and clubs there. For many years and still is, TST is considered the 'dark side' because of the prevalence of so many young triad guys partying at the bars and clubs...many expats esp overseas Chinese were too scared to cross the harbor to go to TST to party…but damn they did know how to party and they had some really hot and cute girls in the crowd. (in TST if you are interested in a girl, make sure you ask her whether or not she has a bf as her bf may be in the triad and those guys can be so hot-headed and possessive).

I heard cases whereby the police really harassed one overseas Chinese guy because they thought he was giving them attitude by not answering their questions...when it later turned out the guy didn't understand Chinese. At the same time speaking English doesn't help either because as UncleDad now knows, the police will think you trying to pull an attitude by pretending not knowing how to speak Chinese unless of course you obviously do not look Chinese.

In TST and Kowloon, the police really treats everyone inside any shady (bars, clubs. Spas, saunas, etc) establishment as a potential triad member during their raids. Usually they are there to look for someone or to check for drug dealing. You will be made to line up by gender for some questioning and ID check. I know some of you do not feel safe carrying your passport because you are afraid of losing it…then carry a photocopy of the passport and entry ticket and show them your local driver’s license or ID instead. By HK law, everyone has to carry ID at all times.

So next time you find yourself at an establishment outside of LKF, just listen to the instructions from police and do not ask questions. Every time someone decides to be uncooperative by pulling attitude, it just means the longer I have to wait until the police decides to end the raid and leave so the lights can be turned off and the music put back on. Plus remember during a raid, you cannot leave the place or go to the toilet, so cooperate so you can go back to your relaxation.
