In the west, those with the same privilege, wealth and status who can afford leisure time at the beach and travel to exotic places in the sun prefer to display their darker skin unlike the pale commoners who toil indoors in places such as factories and call centers. I'd just add that it really pisses me off too, because they sometimes go really overboard and paint their faces with so much makeup that their neck is a completely different colour, and they think it looks pretty. Ugh! It's also clear in the TVB shows thanks to HDTV... And that's another reason why I don't watch TV anymore... Just horrendous....
