For Your man with herpes take an aciclovir tablet once a day for a year you should have no re-occurrence. You Cannot cure it but it should remain in remission, there are no general side effects with this. I have known many guys who have fucked their way through Asia, without a condom, and got nothing as much as a sniffle. What can be common is Candida albens or thrush, which at worst is very painful, and is often mistaken for more serious diseases.
