I agree about there being not much else to do. It's punting, gambling, or sleeping, basically. Yes, there's a little bit of brand-name shopping in the big malls attached to the hotels, but that isn't something that usually interests guys like us.
This is why the hybrid option -- HK plus Macau -- works so well. HK has so much to do during the day time, both punting and non-punting activities, whereas Macau really doesn't. At night, take your pick -- both HK and Macau have lots to offer.
BTW: I've only had good experiences with Macau residents -- very friendly. But that may be because I've only been in the service sector (shops, restaurants, hotels, etc.). Sorry to hear you have found them unfriendly.
