While free is good, most importantly I'm looking for speed and reliability within China. Also ideally something with both proxy server and VPN. thanks

Witopia, SurfBouncer, and Astrill showed up when I just did it. About $50 to $80 USD per year depending on the service required. Some companies make small personal VPN router so you have have multiple devices all sharing the internet connection. Otherwise you run software on your PC.

It's fast (I can stream youtube), and Facebook totally works. and best thing is ITS FREE. It takes about 10-15 minutes of set up because it's free, but it's really idiot proof. Is free really the best idea for something where you type your Yahoo and Gmail passwords, perhaps enter your visa card number, etc? What are they getting from it? Maybe your passwords and visa numbers!  Better off paying for some real security, no? I think it's safe that your passwords won't be compromised. Or just make sure you log in your yahoo and password sensitive pages with direct connection instead - these are not blocked anyways. On the other hand, in some places I am able to get into the English forum of 141 but NOT into the "girl's DB".

I have read this here before and it has certainly always been true for me. The actual Girl DB, however is a different matter. That is usually blocked. I wonder how you were able to see it? Chinese internet technology could have some holes

Anyway a VPN offers some extra advantages for FB, Youtube, greater reliability for overseas email servers, multiple platform access ie mobile, tablet and PC access etc.  It's an important part of being in China for me.
