isn't it obvious why he added a 69 to his username?
it's shows that he is aware of many things since he claims that he's retired in Hongkong

back to the OP's original question...

I'm a senior executive for a multi-national corp. I personally have offices in HK, China and the US. I am extremely familiar with all of the major cities in the US, many in Asia and most in Europe. That being said, HK is one of my top 3 favorite cities in the world. Other than the cost of real estate, for a city of it's caliber, HK is not expensive at all. Real Estate in HK, however, IS very expensive. Although, if you are used to NY, SF, LA, London or Paris real estate prices, then it's fairly similar. In most other services, food, domestic labor, standard of living - HK is a better value. HK has worse pollution than most other cities. Every great city has it's ups and downs. If you want to experience outrageously expensive everything... including ladies for hire... you should check out London, Paris and NY, also Tokyo. For value as far as our hobby goes, HK is among the best - outside of China and other developing Asian nations.

I agree with everything that you said based on my own personal experiences.  I live most of the year in Hong Kong though I have a home in the U.S. as well.  I don't like the summers here because it rains too much so that's when I go golfing in the U.S. and other places.  But when it's winter in the U.S., it's better here in Hong Kong because then I don't have to deal with the snow.

From a mongering point of view, I think Hong Kong is the best place to base yourself as within 1-3 hours, you are a plane ride or boat ride away from major mongering havens like Bangkok, Macau, Zhuhai.  Hell, whenever I get a randy itch, all I have to do is log on to 141, find a woman I'm interested in and within 30 minutes after leaving home, I'm naked and being fully serviced by a total stranger!

Buying real estate is probably where most people see sticker shock, especially when you compare the money you spend for a 1200 square foot flat in Hong Kong vs. what you could get in the U.S. for the same amount of money.  But I would argue that if you tried to buy a flat in New York City or London, you'd be paying similar prices.

Yes as a U.S. citizen you have to pay your taxes but it's up to you to decide how much you want to tell the U.S. govt you're making over here in Hong Kong.  If you play it right, the U.S. govt will not have a W2 from you if you live in HK so they will be relying on your honesty :-).

And any money you earn from investments in Hong Kong, e.g. the stock market is not taxed by the HK government.  This is a huge advantage over the U.S. especially if you still have a U.S. passport.

One question though.  Does your live-in maid provide you with other services other than cleaning and cooking.  I'd be interested in a live-in maid but only if I had full services too, whenever I was in the mood.  I wonder what kind of employment agency I would have to use.  Hmmm, how would I even ask that kind of question?

cheesehead...

Cheesehead,

I believe you are talking about a wife, bro. Been there and done that. I would rather die than go back there. Trust me, it's much better being single. You have no freedom as a married man. Marriage = loss of freedom.

P.S. any bro contemplating marriage should look at: http://www.nomarriage.com/ . Good luck!

I hear that bro. A wife is the only person in the world who can make a guy feel that way.
Fortunately, for me, it's only sometimes and I've learned how to ..'switch off'. But there are still times when I consider
driving my car off the edge of a cliff.

We should just enjoy what we have and be happy. (yes, I do find marriage a little cumbersome as I got older)

alone is the key word...

Yes,

you do die younger if you are alone. The key word is alone, not unmarried. I am unmarried, but I am not alone. I often have girls stay with me overnight at my place. It's called the girlfriend of the month club. I also have a live-in maid. I also have an adorable little beagle.

Marriage is for naive youngsters who don't know any better.

I was single until I was 45 and perfectly happy. I'm certain that I could have stayed single my whole life and been happy.
But now, after being married for so long, I just couldn't go back to being single. Last year I was separated from my wife
for 2 months [no, she didn't leave me - it was something else]. For the first month it was great but by the end of the
second month, all I wanted was be back with my wife.

I admire drjoker for being able to go back to being single and be happy. I don't think many married guys could do it.

My advice, hunter, would be to stay single definitely until your forties. You'll find you still have a lot of choice and you'll
always be able to get a younger wife - if you then decide you want to get married.  Don't marry young, you'll always
regret it and wonder what you missed. I know lots of guys like that.
