I believe also if you jailbreak or unlock your phone yourself, you void the warranty.  If you go for any repairs and they find out, Apple will ask tons of questions before they fix it.

About 1 year after buying my phone, my ATT phone was unlocked for free by ATT.

Yes it was unlocked for free by ATT.  After about 18 months of using my ATT phone, I called them and say I wanted to use my phone overseas. They told my I have to unlocked it and they could do it for free. This was over 4 years ago. I have been a ATT customer for over 10 years before getting this phone. I have gone thur about 2 other phones. The first phone was on their old TDMA network.  I have also done it with my sister's phone when she went to Hong Kong two years ago.

I just pre-ordered 2 iPhone 4s factory unlocked, but I have a few questions before I bring it to HK... both sealed.

Is there any tax or restrictions on bringing iPhone 4s in HK before its released? I know in China impose their brand tax, but what about HK?

Shouldn't be an issue. Electronics are not listed on the HK Gov't website as being dutiable. HK Gov't only really worries about tobacco/liquor/certain food products and restricted items.

If they do ask, just say it's a gift for a friend.
