Google Won't Release Awesome Facial Recognition App

Google has created a facial recognition app that can provide all kinds of personal information on the people around you, but says it's not releasing the technology due to privacy concerns. CNN reported that facial recognition would be a part of Google Goggles, an existing feature of Google's Search app that uses smartphone cameras to recognize objects, scan barcodes, translate text and even solve Sudoku puzzles. The facial recognition feature can associate people with social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, and provide other publicly-available information. Although Google has no release timeline for the feature, it has begun to figure out how to address privacy concerns, CNN reports, including an opt-in system that would only recognize people who allowed it.....

With this app plus social networking... stalker's dream! But hey you can snap a photo of say... a WG. Do the imagining. Works otherway around... WG gets your photo... learns your identity...

Yeah when this technology becomes readily accessible it's going to cause a few problems I suspect. How many guys take pictures/video (openly or stealthily) at mongering destinations, and publicly share them. I've had my mug get caught in photos and videos all the time, at various places I'd rather not be recognized at. Thing is, once this media is posted on the internet (as is happening now with little ill effect), there's no undoing it, so there will be a historical reference, or trail, so to speak. Then when the tech to scan the media becomes available.. Let's just say I won't be running for any presidential elections..

Its only a matter of time before this app is going to be developed n released even though google does not do it as of right now.

Normally it takes forever to get consumer protection legislation enacted, but since a fair percentage of polititians are mongerers, we may find ourselves with representatives
that actually share our interests.

Probably right about now is the time to begin a new habit of randomly posting pictures of myself with complete strangers in bars I only ever visit once!!

Instead you can make several life-sized cutouts of yourself for posting in every restaurant, bar, cafe, hotel lobbies, etc.

thats true, if they release it and the database is hacked many ppl will be screwed over

It may be suppressed, but it is not dead.  Looks like google acquired a facial recognition company
