Bank of East Asia (SEHK: 0023) economist Tang Sai-on estimated the handouts would lift inflation by 0.2 percentage points to 4.7 per cent this year. "The cash handouts amount to about one per cent of the gross domestic product. Even if just half of that is spent, it will still push up inflation."

There you have it. It does little for inflation in HK but for WGs, this could spell a 20% increase in their prices as they would be more accessible to would be punters.

Macau, I believed, didn't post cheques out, but those eligible would go collect the cheque?

In Macau, the cheques are most definitely mailed out to the recipeints but John Tsang had said this would be impractical for HK. Govt will make sure it won't be easy getting hold of this $6,000 so those who don't need the money may forfeit the benefit. We shall see.

I think this is a bit of a farce.  Couldn't see Kowloon today from HK Island as the air is so thick with pollution, and the govt is handing out free cash.

Real shame they didn't use this to help clean up the air pollution here.

to be honest if the govt had that much money to spare they should have used it to help those who really need it i.e the sick and the poor.

Now you're gonna see Li Ka Shing queuing up at the bank to collect his 6k... the real way to spend this money in a meaningful way would be to collect it and then donate it to charity... if everyone did that HK would surely be a better place...

Acerbe, I'm not from Hk, so I'll take your 8-9 free punts.   In return, I promise to make HK a better place!

its two part

There is a 6k handout to all permanent residents over 18

Then there is a 75% tax rebate capped at 6k to all taxpayers

Non-residents and those not covered could get help from some special fund, of which details are yet to be worked out

Here's an excerpt from the above news article: "...Mr Tsang has instead proposed that all permanent residents over the age of 18 will receive a HK$6,000 handout from the government, while taxpayers will enjoy tax rebates worth up to HK$6,000."

I believe this handout applies to all holders of HK permanent IDs, regardless if they are living in HK or not.

Where do you go to get this 6000HKD? and all that is required is a permanent residency?

Yes, I think they have to spend another 2k to arrange redemption center, tellers for printing cheques or counting notes...
How can a government distribute $6k to each of those millions population?

lol at hk citizens apparently (news from my cousin in hk) they are on protest and want to raise it to 17 000 hkd
but i personnally dont think its even gonna be distributed .. theyre just probably using this "proposal" to use the media to distract the people's attention
away from the situation in China.. something similar to 9/11

So I'm confused, some are saying yes you can go back and some are saying you can't go back to get the money?  So if I have family members that still have HKID, we can take a trip back to Hong Kong and I guess part of the trip can be subsidized by the 6k.  That's would be awesome, but at the same time, it's quite a stretch since we are no longer paying money into the HK government but to Uncle Sam.  I don't know how that would make much sense.

I believe that Hong Kong law allows for the dual citizenship of its citizens i.e. one can obtain foreign citizenship and still be considered a Hong Kong citizen. Therefore, even if you pay your taxes to Uncle Sam, you can still be eligible for the $6000 handout. Neat, huh?
