I guess it depends on how rough your hair is.  Mine is really fairly soft... unless it's just stubble, it's not rough.  I also don't trim mine down shorter than about 1/2 inch.  For me it's not pokey at that length.  TMI, but you asked!

It's also nice feeling their hands run smoothly over the area. Great for during ML I think cause you look down and you can see yourself slide all the way in without some hair to block your view!
