Every few months we hear a story of vice and sleaze about our sister island across the water – reports and accounts of efforts made by authorities to set examples and show the world that the Macanese establishment is not in bed with criminals (and we all clearly know the Macau government is one of the most law-abiding, sincere and honorable administrations in the world, right?).
Although it will likely fizzle out in no time, the latest flare up is one of quite some significance, since it is the first anti-prostitution raid that has taken place in such a large hotel. The hotel in question is none other than the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel, and the bust coincidentally coincided with a visit by the billionaire owner Sheldon Adelson (guess he wasn’t satisfied with his treatment) who arrived in Macau on Wednesday and was in the city during the raid.
Such raids are not all uncommon but similar busts usually take place in the run-up to sensitive occasions such as the pro-democracy protester who was arrested to set an example for no apparent reason just before the arrival of Premier Wen Jiabao last month. Prostitution too is not uncommon as well (duh) and it is equally rampant in other big-name Macau hotels (check out some Lisboa Hotel meat here).
During the Venetian bust a total of 110 mainland women believed to be prostitutes and 22 other people thought to be controlling them were detained. It is alleged each of the women detained was forced to pay a daily protection fee of up to HK$ 1,000 to pimps (that’s like the price of two customers or one on a good day, so we hear *cough*).
In Macau prostitution is legal, but procuring is not. As the oldest profession in human history, prostitution will never go away and since Macau has a reputation for being a city of vice where prostitution is rampant, these occasional raids look to be the easiest way to set an example and make up that the Macau authorities are actually doing anything. Bravo.
