Confused, Shenzhen what visa?

I'm confused now, I have read a lot that from Hong Kong you can just take the MTR to Luohu border and then just get the 5 day special Shenzhen visa.
I though I can just get easily there since I'm European. Now my travel agency says that I need to apply for Chinese entry visa to get to Shenzhen.. wtf?

I'm really confused and I just want to ask you bro's which is correct since I don't want to pay for my China entry visa unless it's really required.
I want to make sure that the travel agency is not bull shitting me.

I tried to search this forum before posting, but for some reason I couldn't find a thread. If there is one, my apology.

You'll need a visa.  You can get one at the border when you arrive, this can take a while and costs about 400 HKD.  Alternatively you can get one in HK cheaper and avoid the wait.

Yes I'm aware that I need a visa, but is it a Chinese entry visa or just a 5-day visa for Shenzhen area?
Sorry bro if I didn't type my question clearly.

On the spot, you can easily get a Shenzhen special economic zone visa, which is only for the shenzhen area, not for other parts of china. Hope this clarifies?

I think it's both ...

if you are in Shenzhen it IS China

wasn't aware there's a Shenzhen-only visa - guess I should have checked the small print last time I got one - but it's still a China visa.  If there is such a thing it should make it easier to get.

Conversely a full China visa will get you into Shenzhen also.

Found this and copied from http://wikitravel.org/en/Shenzhen

Certain nationalities arriving from Hong Kong can obtain a single-entry five-day Special Economic Zone Tourism Visa on arrival for ¥160-1,000. At the Luohu border (罗湖口岸), the office is immediately upstairs after clearing the Hong Kong immigration and customs. It is open 9AM-10:30PM seven days a week and only accepts RMB for payment. It can be reached at +86 755-8232-7700 for enquiries. Currently, these visas are available for Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, British and French passport holders. Note that the charge for UK passport holders is much higher at ¥469 for a five-day Shenzhen-only visa, while it costs only ¥160 for most other nationalities. Irish travellers are sometimes charged the same exorbitant UK fee when they are unlucky enough to get a border official who is unaware that the UK and Ireland are different countries. US passport holders are not eligible for this scheme and may even get fined for arriving without a valid visa! The same five-day visas are also available on arrival at the Huanggang and Shekou border offices. There is no visa-on-arrival office at the Futian border. The reason for the differing fees is that Chinese visa fees are set on a reciprocal basis.

Thanks for the helpful info on the Shenzhen Visa. Too bad it doesn't apply to Americans.

Official web site

Please browse this site for everything you want to know about China Visas from Hong Kong - from the China Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong website

http://www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/eng/zgqz/blsjfy/

Also, I suggest strongly that you do NOT use any travel agency etc including China Travel Service - for all they do is go take your passport and apply the same way that you would do yourself; the only difference being that you do NOT get an official receipt for your passport (and I've had a friend get into a real pickle with the travel agent "misplacing" his passport) PLUS it will cost you more.

Only if you insist on not lining up yourself, (which CAN be quite lengthy at times, depending on the time and any holidays/festivals etc coming up) then it's not a complicated process to apply yourself.

Take the KCR to the border, pass through HK immigration, and follow the signs for a Visa before you get to the PRC immigration.

Sorry but me-thinks you've mistaken the Huangang for Lowu or Lok Ma Chau.

Huangang can only be reached by bus and not by the old KCR/now MTR East (?) Line.
