My phobia - snakes!

I gotta admit that I am not a fan of snakes - maybe not to the level of phobia, but not far off. Needless to say that this story might give me nightmares...

http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/mp/ ... fear-in-china-town/

Residents of a township in southwest China have been running scared after more than 160 cobras escaped from an illegal breeding laboratory, state media said on Thursday.

People in Shijiao township in the huge Chongqing municipality have found the deadly snakes in outdoor toilets, kitchens and on the streets since they escaped earlier this month, the Information Times said.

"The other day, Zhang Erfen had just gone into the toilet when we heard a loud scream and she came running out while trying to hike up her pants" after coming face-to-face with a cobra, the paper quoted one villager as saying.

A villager identified as Cai Yong has admitted to raising up to 1,900 cobras in an unlicensed breeding centre in an abandoned schoolhouse. It was not clear if he had been arrested.

Most of the 160 cobras have either been caught or killed by villagers but "five or six" remain unaccounted for, the paper said.

Local health authorities have sent doses of antivenin to the township, reports said.

I have this ingrained old imagery that all people from OZ are into wild animals.

I wonder if these cobras are for consumption or some crazy medical purposes.  Anyone here ever ate one?

I have had "snake soup" in HK before, but not necessarily the cobra variety! Eating snake is supposed to warm the body up, so it's a popular dish in winter in HK. I think the snake gallbladder is supposed to have special medicinal properties and is well sought after.

I have to agree with you, I have a snake phobia also. Snakes scare the hell out of me. They are the only animal that does that. They wouldn't last long in Dongguan before they were all eatin.

Any other animal/beast and I am fine. There is just something about snakes...

We are not all as mad as The Crocodile Hunter was down here in OZ!
