Welcome to the forum bro.

Would be best if you use the forum search to look for an answer to your question that has been answered to death.

Just do a search on SIM or phone under Q&A section and you will see what you're looking for.

You could just buy a local sim card from one of the companies here. 3/Three, Vodafone, Peoples - should be able to find a shop in most areas. Just need to ask them for a sim card, you can even get one with IDD if you want to call abroad.

If you need GPRS access, be careful on buying since they issue 2G sim card (which can't access GPRS)

Actually, you will have a problem.  Sprint is a CDMA phone system, not GSM.  I don't think your Sprint phone is a very good option into HK.  However, you can pass by a place like Fortress or whatever and purchase a cheaper GSM cell phone (unlocked) usually under $50 US, and get a local sim card.

If you plan to visit HK often, you can also keep the sim card live very cheaply.  I have had the same HK number for more than 2 years now with 179179, it costs me about $20US every 6 months to keep the sim card active.  That means when I arrive, my number is good and people who need the number will already have it.

At the airport, you can go in the 7-11 (between the two exit doors) and get a simcard right there if your phone can support it (unlocked).

you can also get one of those dual CDMA and GSM SIM phones so you are not carrying around two phones. I have a dual GSM sim phone and its amazing while travelling as you dont have heavy pockets.

Wanted to ask about those types of phones, as they are not readily available here in North America. Do the SIMs have work for the same mobile provider, or could they be totally different?

Example: Let's say in I'm with AT&T over here, then turn on roaming in HK with HK mobile provider #1. Then I decide to buy a short term SIM with HK mobile provider #2. This way I can answer personal, work related calls on my regular line and have a second local line for punting or whatever. Will this arrangement work so I don't need to carry 2 phones around?

Most convenience stores in HK have them available. Get the card, then you can purchase refill cards to put into them.

Example:  ...

yes, they can be two totally different providers.  What many people use them for is to have one SIM for a China carrier, one SIM for a HK carrier.  Or you can do one for your North American carrier, one for HK.

Or, more importantly for this forum - one phone number for the wife, one phone number for the er nai.

Good to hear. Now just gotta find a phone that I like that has dual sims. Would probably have to order something overseas, as NA providers are very guarded about phone competition, and thus select handsets.

Never heard of a dual sim phone.  Isn't a bb best for traveling from NA as you can buy a monthly international plan that is pretty reasonable

Yes a BB is good but when you literally cross the border the local SIM cards will automatically transfer from China to HK (or vice versa).  If you are using your BB outside your home country then you are burning up minutes or paying a premium.  Dual is the way to go.
