my understanding is that Japanese phones run on particular frequencies that may not be compatible with every country.  make sure you know where you plan to use it and if its compatible there.  As far as buying, you can buy pretty much any type of cell phone in mongkok, but dont know how the price compares.

Thanks you for the information.  If I bring a Blackberry to Hong Kong from Japan, can the shops in Hong Kong unlock it? Can you recommend any places?

Mong kok has shops - esp Sindat, which can unlock - look on 2nd floor

I bought an LG phone from the UK- one which hasnt been released in HK, and will not be released either - and they managed to finally unlock after 2-3 weeks.

Call Blackberry directly and read off the serial number and they will provide unlock code.  At least that how it is done in the States.

Ref blackberry, my only question is does anyone recomend/know any good palces to get Blackberry repaired? As i find my provider while giving me a good contract for the phone/minutes/internet etc...the repair charges seem ridiculously high

And despite being covered by warranty, of coruse they always find a loophole that this reason to fix it isnt covered

Any suggestions in Mongkok/Shamshuipo that could be good to get it fixed in future?

Cheers

Just curious on what is wrong with the blackberry.  If you are just trying to replace the housing or trackball, it can be very easy if you google some tutorials.  Im in the states and buy most of my replacement parts on ebay.  The only tool you need is a T5 screw driver.

Is it unlocked? NTT Docomo locks ALL their phones. It's a major pain in the neck.

You may have to bring it back to your original carrier. That's how it's done in Japan. I called RIM and they told me the warranty is with the carrier. You maight want to try CSL. They may be able to service it.

In Japan, NTT Docomo. They are willing to sell me a SIM card and their services but if anything happens to the phone, they won't service it.....unless you buy their Blackberry phone. That's the major negative point about the cell phone market in Japan.
