grantorino2, just thought of 2 more movies you can try checking out:

Bullet in the Head - pretty much another classic w/ Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, etc. back in the day
Bride with White Hair 1 & 2 - both starring Leslie Cheung and Brigitte Lin

Who really watches HK movies anymore? I struggle to find something worth watching. US TV series are so much more entertaining.

I thought the movie "Accident" was going to be alright... but OH MY GOD!!! boring as hell! rather eat my own toenails then do watch that again..

I have not seen a decent HK film in ages.

banger is right though "Bullet in the HEad" now that is a classic... but hate all the old voice overs... never did understand why they had to have all those voice overs back in those movies.

NEW MOVIES "accident" was just strange, slow and lethargic to the mind, trying to hard to do the artsy thing too and trying too hard to look too much into absolutely nothing.  "pandoras booth" was OK, "the first 7th night" was actually written exceptionally well, the cast could have been better though, "night and fog" was an eye opening experience, "seven to one" was so so, trying a bit hard to be artsy, "split second murders" was enjoyable, a bit mo lei tau, "vengeance" was OK, but if Anthony Wong and Johnny Halladay were not in it, it would have been shit, "vampire super" wasted me 2 hours out of my life.

I love watching HK movies, these are all 2009 pretty much, I try to keep watching movies with my older sons so that they keep their Cantonese in check, they also watch lots of TVB series, but that is another story.

If only they could come out with something as good as Goo wak jai was back in the day.   I loved those old school triad ones too, portland street blues, 13th sister, and all the spinoffs were very funny and good.

2046 was shit.......

I enjoyed the previous one "In the mood for love" I thought was incredibly done, even though it was artsy, it wasn't overdone.  The sequel was unbelievably boring, I have no idea what people liked about that one.  Wong Ka Wai was definitely in over his head on that one, talk about overkill.

Okay, thanks bros, for the many suggestions. Netfix has almost all of these titles. So very cool, thx again. Any more mainland productions?  Has anyone seen 'Mongol' (2007) about Ghengis Khan. That movie was great on many levels, i.e. action, intrigue, hot babes.

in reality, asking for recommendations for Asian movies is difficult unless you narrow it down by genre.  Also for drama, you have to list whether you like insomnia-driven slow movies such as Schindler's List.  If you like those time of movies, then the movies like In the Mood for Love and Farewell My Concubine and Ju Dou might be good for you.  You have 2 viewpoints on the artsy movies that Wong Kar Wai and Zhang Yimou make - they're great movies (as evidenced by the fact that almost all their movies win awards), or they're not watchable to most (as evidenced by their lousy box office numbers in almost all cases).

In general, HK movies post 2004 have pretty much been the shitz, once all the great directors (John Woo, Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam, et al) went over to North America to show their talents, and once actors like Jackie Chan and Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat went to Hollywood, and Stephen Chow went into real estate, and Maggie Chueng decided to go international.

Korean movies (and TV dramas for that matter) have been the rage for the last few years throughout Asia.  Since the HK movie Infernal Affairs, I've struggled to find a really good HK movie that I would call a classic.  Red Cliff and Ip Man were the best from last year and I wouldn't call either one classics, but both are decent movies.

I think I have the Mongol movie you are  asking about. I took some time to scanned the cover for you. The movie is OK with lots of action. The girls are not that pretty in my opionion but you might think differently.

primer on HK films

I would say that over 50%, probably more, of the great HK movies have involved only a few name superstars:  Jackie Chan,  Chow Yun-Fat, Stephen Chow, and to a slightly smaller extent Jet Li and Andy Lau.  These are the guys that, almost without exception, if they're in the movie, it's a box office success.  What's weird, excluding Andy Lau, there has only been 1 or 2 movies where more than one of these actors have appeared in together.

So, a recommended list based on these actors:

Stephen Chow:

Modern Setting:
Fight Back to School I, Fight Back to School II
Tricky Brains
All For the Winner, God of Gamblers II, God of Gamblers III: Back To Shanghai
From Beijing With Love
Love On Delivery
Shaolin Soccer

Period Films:
Justice My Foot
Royal Tramp
King of Beggars
Hail The Judge
Chinese Odyssey - Pandora's Box, Chinese Odyssey - Cinderella

Chow Yun Fat - his best movies are the intense, shoot-them-up movies.
A Better Tomorrow I, II, III
Autumn's Tale
God of Gamblers, God of Gamblers' Return
City On Fire
Prison On Fire
The Killer
All About Ah Long (drama)
Wild Search
Hard Boiled
Full Contact
Tiger On Beat (comedy)

Jackie Chan:
Fearless Hyena/Young Master
Project A, Project A II
Police Story, Police Story II, Police Story III (Super Cop), Police Story IV (First Strike)
Armour of God, Armour of God II (Operation Condor)
Crime Story (completely serious movie, no comedy)
Drunken Master, Drunken Master II
Wheels on Meals
Dragons Forever

Jet Li:
Shaolin Temple
Martial Arts of Shaolin
Once Upon a Time In China I, Once Upon a Time in China II, Once Upon a Time in China III
Swordsman 2
Fong Sai Yuk, Fong Sai Yuk II
Fist of Legend
High Risk
My Father Is A Hero
Hitman
Hero
Fearless
