As a working professional, learn Mandarin first and then Cantonese when you have time.

it is good to learn both ,but to me i think it is more important to learn manderin as CHina is emerging to be the #1 world power behind the US. My frd is from toronto and he only knows cantonese, but regret not knowing manderin as it limits his job oppurtunities in hong kong and in china +communication with the MM~

Well for most part I think mandarin is used in most parts of china, and based on watching tvb series i would guess cantonese is the main language spoken in hk. i mostly picked up most my cantonese from watching movies, and as for mandarin i don't even know a word of it.

Here's one interesting fact I've observed over the few years in Hong Kong:

If you're in an electronics store, and you speak cantonese, the sales people will be average nice to you. But if you speak mandarin -- the sales will fucking kill and move a mountain for you, maybe because you're obviously a baller from China who will buy like 100 iphones. So I guess mandarin has its advantages in earning more respect??

I'd have to say if your going to be in Hong Kong it's far better to learn Cantonese. Mandarin is hardly used in HK except by mainland tourists and a few immigrants.

Hong Kongers speak Cantonese and never use Mandarin.

If your going to be in China then yes Mandarin is better, but i'd disagree with the people on this thread who say learn Mandarin for Hong Kong....you'll get quite a lot of blank stares and such.  If your in Hong Kong speak Cantonese stay away from Mandarin.

Plus Cantonese sounds so much better than Mandarin.  I remember when I was quite young and I had taken a trip into China....heard someone speaking Mandarin...I could understand part of it and I thought they had a speach impediment. Still sounds like that to me sometimes....

If I hadn't said it enough when in Hong Kong speak Cantonese!

If you're staying in Hong Kong and won't be venturing into Mainland China much, should definitely pick up Cantonese. However that being said, Mandarin can open up lots of opportunities in China.

Forget Cantonese. It's harder to learn than Mandarin and most people speak Mandarin in HK anyway, particularly the young. Cantonese would be practically useless in China except for Guangzhou. Most of the inhabitants in Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan are migrant workers and speak Mandarin as well.
