Openrice - Now in English too!

Many of the bros recommend www.openrice.com to look for restaurants/cafes to go to eat.  It is a great site for food in HK and previously was only in Chinese.  Though it did have many reviews in English, one needed to be able to read Chinese to be able to use its search functions.  Now the site comes in an English too.  Look for the black English button on the upper right hand side.

It will lead to a separate site that is completely in English.  It is just like Chinese site and is very comprehensive. You can have a choice of seeing only English reviews or you can see both Chinese and English reviews.

The only noticeable differences I noticed that I hope they will correct in the future are that it doesn't indicate which restaurants have closed down already (Chinese site shows you if place no longer exists) and there is no English version site for restaurant coverage of Macau and Shenzhen which are also covered in the Chinese site.

Thanks for the update   .....although I usually don't use that website much.

Now that English is available as well, I'll likely refer to it more often.

somewhat similar to the difference between the Chinese forum and the English forum, would you trust reviews in English on Openrice?  I would trust the pu$$y reviews, but definitely not the restaurant reviews.  I say that because here in the US, if you look at the Chinese restaurant reviews in English, the one Chinese restaurant that always gets high marks is PF Changs, and that isn't even a Chinese restaurant if you ask me.  Sort of like saying that Taco Bell is a Mexican restaurant.

Totally in agreement on the Taco Bell comment; I'm more partial to Chipotle myself.  Now that's a REAL Mexican restaurant!  Fine, maybe not, but it's a lot closer than Taco Bell.

I'd be hesitant to trust restaurant reviews on openrice too, but I would have no problem using it as a guide to get info on prices, decor, aesthetics, etc.  Kind of like the way I use Yelp right now in the US.

I know what you mean of your suspicions about the English reviews on openrice.  You would think the reviewer is a foreigner who doesn't know real Chinese food from PJ Changs.

But in Hong Kong there alot Chinese (local and overseas-returnees) who prefer to write in English because it is easier for them.  Sometimes I am surprised by the number of locals who write sms in English even when their spoken English is crap.

So if you looking for more of 'local' view in the English reviews, just pay attention to the syntax and grammar of the review, then you will have a better idea if the person is local or not.  Of course doesnt work 100% as there are enough locals who very well educated here and yet still prefer to write in English even when their English, Cantonese, and Mandarin are excellent.

Taco Bell isn't real Mexican food!? Nooo!

Haha... hmm, OpenRice seems decent, except most of the English reviews are pretty old... have to refer to the Chinese post for the most recent ones. Also some reviews seem like a joke too..  got to love the fact that ALOT of the reviewers put up pictures of the food

Thanks for sharing this website.  It has alot of useful and interesting facts about where to go eat in Hong Kong.  The website is very easy to use now since they have english translation.  I will definately be using it when I go back to HK.
