Funny Video

Being English, I'm no big fan of the French, or the Americans for that matter, but this is a video of an American talking about the French and it's really funny. Well, I think it's funny.

LOL!  I'm American and always enjoy a good French diss.  Just FYI, the guy in the video is Bill Maher.

I don't watch his stuff, but he definitely made some good points in the clip!

Doesn't seem like a French diss to me (apart from the accordion comment). Seems like a diss on America.

Brilliant ending, so if you watch it, stay for the punchline

"they have public intellectuals in france, we have Dr Phil"

yeah bro rimsky, it actually seems more of american put-downs than dissing the french. i'm not
american nor am i french but it seems that many people don't seem to like the french - thats, if
you ask me, a product of the american/british media. i know some french folk and i have been
to france: just like any country, they have their fair share of nice guys and not so nice guys.

wonder why the french are always the butt of the jokes - must be another consequence of
losing wars and yet ending up on the winning side.

Yeah, most of the antipathy towards other countries usually comes from one war or another. Like WWII when the French surrendered too easily and the Yanks stayed home and watched from the sidelines - which is where they would've stayed if the Japanese hadn't been so fuckin stupid.

doesn't help the french to have been the weakest link on the allied side in both
WWI and WWII. imagine getting trounced by germany twice in a space of 30 years and the
second time around, in such unbelievably quick time.

unfortunately now, when americans/brits think of the french military, they think vichy and the maginot line. abit of ridicule here and a tad of animosity there.

in a testosterone-driven world, you get judged on the accomplishments (or lack thereof) of
your military and to a lesser extent, the number of rugby or footie world cups you win
(or don't).

You missed Vietnam from your list ... was a French colony originally, and it's frankly not entirely surprising the commies looked like an attractive alternative for the locals.

On the one hand I greatly admire French self-confidence - their sure certainty that their cuisine / wine / arts are the best in the world is charming ...

... but then noticing that the majority of French expats send their kids to English-speaking schools made me realise their nationalistic confidence is getting hollow.  Or maybe that's how they always are, and the reason they're such consummate politicians ..?

agreed. lets just say the french were not the flavour of the month amongst the local vietnamese as far as progress and
human rights were concerned.

but back to the war theory, strange that the french defeat in vietnam was not that harped on as the american defeat
from the social-conversation point of view. perhaps the french had a history of losing wars and the vietnam one was
no different while the americans had great historical success at winning wars and vietnam was abit of a shock?

no one laughs at the american defeat or makes any comical allusion to what happened in vietnam while the french
get ridiculed for getting their berets knocked off them by a technologically backward opponent.
